Research Teaching Specialist III (Small Animal Surgeon)
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III (Small Animal Surgeon) for the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine within NJMS.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Performs surgery and invasive procedures on mice and rats in accordance with approved IACUC research protocols.
- Assures that pain relief is administered consistent with applicable veterinary standards.
- Adheres to all controlled substance safety regulations and standard operating procedures. This includes maintaining accurate records of controlled substance usage, ensuring proper storage and handling and following protocols for disposal of unused or expired substances.
- Adheres to animal welfare standards that require a deep understanding of surgical techniques but also a commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards in the care and treatment of animals.
- Prepares and amends animal and biosafety protocols.
- Keeps records for surgical procedures, post-operative observations, and the use of anesthetic and analgesics and controlled substances.
- Meets expectations for surgical productivity, surgical outcomes and data acquisition.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Physical Demands:
This position involves prolonged standing, walking and sitting, as well as use of research instruments. Some stooping, reaching, climbing and bending. Must demonstrate manual dexterity required to manipulate small instruments. Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6½ feet. Hearing and speech capabilities necessary to communicate with other researchers and staff in person, on the telephone, by e-mail and by hand-held devices. Vision capable of viewing small animals, computer monitors, charts, forms, text and numbers for prolonged periods. Must be able to work comfortably with a microscope.
Work Environment:
Must be available to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.
Salary: A maximum of $80,000 is budgeted for this position.
