PhD Position on Improving Social Media Using Large Language Models

Job Summary

The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in the NWO VIDI project "Improving Social Media Using Large Language Models." This project focuses on using large language models (LLMs) to analyze, simulate, critique, and intervene in online political communication on social media platforms, addressing issues like misinformation, polarization, radicalization, and manipulation.

Responsibilities

The PhD candidate will have substantial freedom to shape their project within the research theme, including exploring how LLMs can improve social media. This involves theoretical and applied research, with opportunities to present at conferences and publish in high-impact venues. The role also includes assisting in teaching undergraduates and master students.

Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a closely related field such as artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, or data science. Required skills include strong programming abilities, experience with machine learning (especially natural language processing), familiarity with political communication, social media analysis, and computational social science. Excellent written and spoken English is essential, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively is required. Knowledge of Dutch is not necessary.

What the Employer Offers

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for up to 4 years (initially 18 months, extendable after evaluation), with a preferred start date before January 2026. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 (scale P), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance. Additional benefits include 232 holiday hours per year, pension contributions, opportunities for professional development courses, parental leave, and support for housing and learning Dutch if desired. The position is based in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment at the University of Amsterdam.
