PhD position Trapped Ions in Optical Tweezers

Job Summary: The position involves developing a new platform for quantum computing using trapped ions in optical tweezers. This includes exploring interactions with tightly focused laser beams, utilizing the optical Magnus effect for quantum gates, sub-Doppler cooling of ion crystals, qubit readout, and designing scalable ion traps based on integrated photonics.

Responsibilities: Develop and explore a quantum computing platform with trapped ions and optical tweezers; implement state-of-the-art quantum gates using the optical Magnus effect; perform sub-Doppler cooling and qubit readout; design and scale ion traps for quantum applications.

Qualifications and Requirements: At least 8 months of master project experience in experimental ultracold atom or trapped ion groups; good team working and English skills; strong letter of recommendation from master project supervisor; must be within the first four years of research career without a doctoral degree and not have resided in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the three years prior to recruitment.

What the Employer Offers: A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for up to 4 years (initially 18 months with extension after evaluation); preferred start date of 1 October 2025; opportunity to work towards a dissertation; educational plan including courses and international meetings; assistance in teaching undergraduates and master students.
