Job Summary

Under the direction of the Supervising Plumber, this position provides skilled plumbing work in installation, repair, and maintenance of university structures, minor construction and special projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain piping systems including water, gas, air, steam, vacuum, storm drains, waste lines, irrigation systems, and related traps and valves.
• Performs schedule preventive maintenance requiring repair or replacement of plumbing parts or equipment when necessary.
• Test, certify, and repair backflow preventive devices.
• Sees that tools, materials, and equipment are on hand or available to the job to function efficiently and economically.
• Assist in all University functions, responds to emergency situations as required.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,998 (Step 1) - $8,737 (Step 20) per month.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate possesses comprehensive knowledge of the Uniform Plumbing Code and applicable Division of Industrial Safety regulations, along with a strong command of plumbing trade tools, equipment, and techniques. They are skilled in reading blueprints, working from plans, rough sketches, and detailed specifications, and fully understand confined‑space entry procedures. Experience operating a backhoe is desirable, and they demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills that support positive interactions with colleagues, customers, and the University community. Their background includes experience in a university or large public institutional setting, allowing them to navigate complex environments while upholding high standards of safety, professionalism, and technical proficiency.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a high school diploma and journey-level plumber skills similar to that acquired through the completion of a plumber's apprenticeship program required.

Licenses / Certificates

• Valid California driver's license required.
• City of Long Beach Health Department certificate for Limited Backflow Prevention Device Tester, highly desirable or must be obtained within six (6) months of hiring date.
