Program Coordinator, Professional Development & Alumni Relations (Career Strategies Professional III)

Position Highlights

The Graduate College is seeking top candidates for a Program Coordinator for Professional Development and Alumni Relations that will support the success of graduate students and post-docs by coordinating programs and partnerships that prepare them for meaningful careers and connect them with alumni networks. This individual designs and delivers programming focused on core essential (soft) skills such as leadership, communication, collaboration, resilience, and emotional intelligence, skills that are increasingly essential across all sectors. The program coordinator also strengthens alumni engagement through targeted outreach, events, and communication, fostering a vibrant, supportive community that enhances the student and post-doc experience and post-graduate outcomes.

The Professional Development and Alumni Relations Program Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Graduate Center initiatives with a dotted line to the Associate Director of Graduate Career Services.

Duties & Responsibilities

Professional Development Program Support:

  • Coordinate and deliver professional development workshops and seminars that support the development of transferable (soft) skills including leadership and teamwork, communication (oral, written, and cross-cultural), time management, conflict resolution, resilience, emotional intelligence, and networking and relationship-building strategies and provide 1:1 support to reinforce these skills through individualized advising and coaching.
  • Collaborate with training grant and fellowship PIs to design and implement professional development training in alignment with the funding agency priorities.
  • Partner with faculty and campus partners to incorporate essential skill training and integrated learning experiences into research, teaching, and professional development frameworks.
  • Develop digital resources and strategies for effective communication with students, staff, and faculty. This includes, but is not limited to, development of content for newsletters, social media, and the Center's website to promote professional development resources and alumni engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Student Engagement and Career Development (SECD), faculty, student organizations and the Post Doctoral Association to identify needs and build responsive programming.
  • Collaborate with Graduate Center team members to embed essential skill development into all programming, with standalone workshops and integrated modules across events.

Alumni Relations:

  • Support the development of graduate and professional alumni engagement strategies in coordination with university alumni relations.
  • Organize alumni-student/post-doc networking events, virtual meetups, and mentorship programs.
  • Maintain an updated alumni contact database and manage communications that highlight alumni success and opportunities to give back.
  • Develop content for newsletters, social media, and the Center's website to promote professional development resources and alumni engagement opportunities.
  • Highlight alumni success stories across a range of fields (academia, industry, nonprofit, government) to showcase career diversity and inspire current students/post-docs.

Assessment and Reporting:

  • Analyze data and create summary reports on attendance, impact, and outcomes to inform continuous improvement and share successes with internal and external stakeholders
  • Assess evolving workforce trends and employer expectations to shape curriculum and maintain relevance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with professional development technologies and platforms (e.g., Handshake, Trellis)
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective programming related to wellness, mentoring, financial education, or identity-informed career pathways.
  • Skills in data collection, assessment, and program revaluation.
  • Knowledge of career development frameworks, transferable skill-building, and effective advising strategies.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills across various audiences and formats.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree; 1 year of experience providing career, professional development, or academic coaching to students, ideally at the graduate level; Experience working with first-generation, international, or non-traditional graduate student populations.
