We are seeking a bright and enthusiastic research assistant to join the Spatial Profiling and Annotation Centre of Excellence (SPACE), led by Prof. Gregory Hannon and Dr. Dario Bressan, at the CRUK Cambridge Institute, University of Cambridge. This role will involve contributing to the laboratory's research activities by developing and performing assays from the field of histology and spatial "omics" (with a focus on spatial transcriptomics and multi-omics) on tumour clinical samples and tumour models, as well as contributing to the development of new technologies and models in that field.
The SPACE centre of excellence is a multidisciplinary group focused on improving spatial molecular profiling technologies (spatial proteomics, transcriptomics, genomics) and applying them to big problems in cancer biology and beyond, through large collaborations within and outside of Cambridge. It includes most available spatial omics technologies, as well as a world class data processing centre and a dedicated staff including biologists, technologists and bioinformaticians. The centre was developed following a successful cancer grand challenge project (IMAXT). Some of the projects currently carried out in the centre include the development of a predictor for triple-negative breast cancer response to therapy, work on the impact of ovarian cancer tumour heterogeneity on its metastatic dissemination, and a project focused on investigating low-to-high grade transition in gliomas.
The Hannon group is renowned for its contributions to RNA biology and cancer research, consistently developing innovative tools to tackle cutting-edge questions. The group has established a robust pipeline for 3D spatial characterization of tumours and tissues, amassing unique imaging data paired with spatially and temporally resolved single-cell transcriptomics and proteomics.
The role holder will work closely with the SPACE team and with the collaborating laboratories. Duties will include sample receipt, designing and performing experiments, reporting results, and ensuring a high and consistent level of quality in experimental work. It is envisioned that the role holder could become closely embedded in a particular project carried out within SPACE, with the possibility of engaging in a course of studies at the University of Cambridge (MSc or PhD) in that context if one is offered.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and competent individual with excellent laboratory skills in molecular biology, histology or cell biology. A background in genomics and previous experience in cancer research are desirable. In particular, we encourage applications from candidates with previous experience with in situ technologies such as single molecule FISH, in-situ transcriptomics, multiplexed IHC, or similar.
Experience with tissue culture, RNA extraction and purification, histology, microscopy or bioinformatic analysis would be beneficial but are not strictly required. The successful candidate should show initiative and independent thinking, possess excellent communication and organizational skills, and have the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a diverse team, integrating their work with that of others. Applicants should have a BSc or MSc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Natural Sciences) as well as a reasonable amount of practical research experience.
