Research Assistant/Research Associate (Fixed Term)
Research Assistant/Research Associate (Fixed Term)
Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to utilise recent capability built in our group [Nature 2020, Science 2021, Nature 2022, Nature Machine Intelligence 2023, Nature Energy 2024] to image operating perovskite solar PV cells with high spatial (hundreds of nanometers) and temporal (hundreds of picoseconds) resolution.
This project will push these capabilities further including to automated platforms to generate large statistical data sets. We will also experiment with untried higher spatial resolution techniques. The large, multi-dimensional data sets will be analysed by bespoke machine-learning driven algorithms, combined with physical models, to de-noise images, identify features and correlate properties – giving critical insights into power loss pathways. These platforms will not only drive the next phases of R&D in solar cell and optoelectronic materials development but could also be incorporated as future in-line diagnostic tools on manufacturing lines.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related area. A proven track record of scientific publication and presentation at international conferences is essential. Experience in performing optical microscopic spectroscopy of materials is essential, for example (but not limited to) photoluminescence and/or pump-probe techniques. Strong optics experience including building and/or adapting setups is essential, and experience working with coding, automation and algorithm development highly desired. Direct experience working with halide perovskites is highly desired.
The development of independent research projects will also be expected. The role holder will also manage the key experimental setups associated with their work and extend existing capabilities. The PDRA will be team-oriented and work closely with other students and PDRAs and international collaborators.
The successful PDRA candidate for this post will join the Optoelectronic Materials and Device Spectroscopy group in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, and will also be part of the Optoelectronics Group. We are an inclusive and diverse group driving a number of active outreach and widening participation activities. Collectively, the PDRA will have access to world-leading expertise and facilities in the field of hybrid and organic electronics.
The role is funded by a City University of Hong Kong partnership with the University of Cambridge, and the successful candidate will be named a 'City University of Hong Kong Postdoctoral Research Fellow' for the duration of their tenure.
Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed as a Research Assistant and promoted to Research Associate when the PhD is awarded.
The successful candidate would start anytime from 1st October 2025, with some flexibility.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
