Position Description
Under the general supervision of the Division Dean, the Respiratory Therapist Instructor/Clinical Education Director works collaboratively with the Respiratory Therapist Program Director and other faculty and staff in the Health Sciences Division. The Respiratory Therapist Instructor/Clinical Education Director is responsible for theory and clinical instruction, including student evaluation, and arranging, evaluating, and overseeing all clinical education experiences. This includes organizing adjunct faculty and student clinical assignments and providing liaison with the division office. The instructor may be expected to work in a classroom incorporating computer activities, as well as one with a traditional instructional format. Participation as a full-time faculty member in department, division and campus-wide activities are required. Night and weekend work may be required; work assignments include all District campuses and sites; location assignments other than District campuses and sites may be required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach assigned courses in the Respiratory Therapist Program, and employ learner-centered instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.
- Teach respiratory therapy curriculum in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.
- Work collaboratively with the program director, advisory board, adjunct faculty, community and students to evaluate the program curriculum and implement necessary changes.
- Provide academic advisement to students and serve as a role model through participation in professional organizations and demonstration of exceptional practice skills.
- Develop on-line courses and increase skills in the use of educational technology to the benefit of the program.
- Develop curriculum and contribute to the department program review processes.
- Provide classroom and clinical instruction and student evaluation in a variety of settings; demonstrate current clinical and theoretical knowledge required by a curriculum that is highly responsive to a rapidly changing and demanding job market.
- Provide leadership for the clinical education component of the respiratory therapist program. This includes organization, continuous review, planning, development and general effectiveness of the clinical component of the program.
- Provide leadership in recruiting new clinical faculty and preceptors. Maintain current clinical contracts and pursue new clinical opportunities.
- Identifying, recruiting, orienting, and developing new and existing faculty members.
- Develop agendas and conduct productive meetings for faculty members and support staff.
- Analyze administrative problems and challenges and develop cost-effective solutions in a timely manner.
- Advise prospective and current students with questions and possible educational difficulties.
- Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
- Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours and attend department/division meetings.
- Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
- Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.
- Convey a compelling vision of the clinical education program future that motivates and inspires team members.
- Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
- Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
- Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
- Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
- Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
- Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
- Initiate and enhance institutional and teaching practices and aim to create a culturally responsive and equity driven teaching environment.

- Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
- Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or other designated locations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A current valid license to practice as a Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of California.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- The Director of Clinical Education must have a minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist; of which at least two (2) years must include clinical respiratory care.
- The Director of Clinical Education must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty member or as a clinical preceptor.
- Any bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited institution plus two (2) years professional experience, or any associates degree and six (6) years of professional experience (may include adjunct appointment and/or clinical liaison/preceptor.) Note: Applicants who have not yet earned a bachelor's or master's degree as listed at the time of the application deadline, but who expect to receive any of the above-listed degrees must submit a letter from the graduate school dean certifying their anticipated completion date.

- Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.
Desirable Qualifications
- Teaching experience in respiratory therapy at the post-secondary level.
- Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning.
- Experience creating socially conscious syllabi, equitable classroom materials and inclusive pedagogical practices to promote an inclusive environment.
- Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with Asian American, African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one's relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students and others.
- A commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
- Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
