Scope of Job:

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body as an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at the School of Art & Design beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. This tenure-track position is scheduled to begin September 1, 2025, as an art education educator and researcher to help lead our large (increasing enrollments) and already successful art education area into an even more promising future. This position requires close collaboration with art education, art history, and studio art/design faculty.

Responsibilities (Assistant Professor):

  • An ability to teach art education coursework from introductory to advanced classes and engage productively with students at all skill levels, including art foundation courses as needed.
  • Demonstrate outstanding verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills, by being conversant in the historical and contemporary movements within the field of art education.
  • Candidate should be conversant in the historical and contemporary movements within the field of art education and museums.
  • A commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member.
  • A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serve and mentor diverse student populations.
  • The successful applicant will be able to build relationships with colleagues and K-12 educators in the Rio Grande Valley.
  • Teach at the BFA and/or MFA level as assigned by the Director of the School of Art and Design on two campuses 65 miles apart in distance.
  • Engage in service to the school, college, university, community (including community outreach), and profession.
  • Willing to create partnerships through community projects outside of university and function as a bridge between students and community.
  • Actively participate in departmental, college, and university service and leadership, including committee work and academic support services such as portfolio reviews, student advising, and recruitment activities.
  • Participate in maintaining and building interdisciplinary collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must possess:

  • A terminal degree MFA (or equivalent) with an emphasis in printmaking/drawing or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship and/or creative practice as appropriate for the discipline.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop and sustain a research agenda capable of achieving national or international recognition in printmaking/drawing and/or emergent practices of design.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:

  • Robust knowledge of technique, theory, and history of printmaking.
  • Familiarity with expanded printmaking processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully adjust teaching and mentoring methods in response to the learning needs of students from varying backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated interest, ability, and potential for leadership of the printmaking/drawing area.
  • Interest and experience in facilitating student projects or coursework that cut across or use more than one of the traditional areas of the studio arts.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Two years of experience teaching printmaking, drawing, or related courses at the university level.
  • A record of professional activity and/or scholarly/creative research that demonstrates an emerging national representation in the field of printmaking/drawing. Candidates will continue their professional research, which is relevant to the current and future practice of printmaking/drawing.
