Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia seeks applications for a Senior Graphic Designer. This position offers opportunities to expand creative expertise, explore multimedia and UI/UX projects, and contribute to the visual direction that shapes the university’s story.
About the Role
The Senior Graphic Designer is a creative storyteller and visual strategist who brings the university’s brand to life across print, digital, and multimedia platforms. Combining design expertise with conceptual thinking, the role transforms ideas into compelling visuals that advance the institution’s mission, engage diverse audiences, and strengthen brand consistency. The designer collaborates with others across campus to develop cohesive, accessible, and brand-aligned visual solutions and reports to the Director of Communications.
Specific duties include the following:
- Design high-quality visual materials for print, digital, social, and environmental graphic communications.
- Translate strategic goals and creative briefs into compelling visual concepts and campaigns.
- Contribute to brand oversight, ensuring visual consistency across all university materials and channels.
- Collaborate with writers, photographers, videographers, and web specialists to develop integrated storytelling solutions.
- Support concept development and visual direction for marketing initiatives and campaigns.
- Produce design materials and templates for recurring projects and campus partners.
- Partner with external vendors and design partners, providing brand guidance, materials, and quality control to ensure alignment with university standards.
- Participate in creative planning and contribute to the team’s long-term visual strategy.
- Capture or direct photography to support brand storytelling as needed.
- Use UI/UX design for digital experiences, applying best practices in accessibility and user-centered design.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing creative quality with timely delivery.
- Maintain organized project files and resources within project management systems to ensure effective recordkeeping and sustainability.
Position Qualifications
Successful applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:
- Associate’s degree in graphic design, visual communication, or related field.
- Minimum of four years of professional design experience.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and After Effects.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in layout, typography, and visual storytelling across print, digital, and social platforms.
- Knowledge of brand systems, accessibility standards, and design production processes.
- Experience working with digital libraries, templates, or shared content repositories (e.g., SharePoint, Canva, and digital assessment management systems).
- Demonstrated proficiency with project management platforms (e.g., Monday.com, Asana, or similar) and workflow design.
- Strong understanding of marketing processes and creative production workflows.
- Exceptional attention to detail and excellent organization and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively and provide excellent service across teams.
Preferred candidates will have the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communication, or related field.
- Experience with UI/UX design, web design, and/or interactive media.
- Experience in motion graphics and/or video editing.
- Familiarity with photography and photo editing.
- Experience in higher education, at an advertising agency, or with an in-house marketing and communications team.
