The UTMB School of Nursing

For over a century, UTMB has dedicated its efforts toward improving people's health in Texas and beyond. In addition to designing and implementing innovative ways to deliver instruction to students at distant locations, the school continuously explores opportunities to expand its offerings and interprofessional learning. The UTMB School of Nursing offers certifications, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level Nursing programs. In addition to classroom lectures and state-of-the-art simulation experiences, our programs offer clinical training opportunities in a variety of settings to ensure our students have exposure to a multitude of professional opportunities.

Senior Vice President and Dean - School of Nursing is the chief administrative and academic officer of the school and is responsible for its strategic, research, academic, clinical, and business affairs. The Dean is responsible for faculty and staff recruitment and empowerment, faculty shared governance, research productivity and funding, student enrollment and excellent student experience, programmatic development and growth, programs and schools' national reputation and ranking, collaborations with other schools, the health system, and the community.

The next Dean of the School of Nursing will be a visionary leader and strategic thinker, deeply committed to advancing the school's mission and will foster scientific discovery, support and strengthen academic programs, and enhance clinical outreach and service into the broader University and healthcare communities.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Significant successful administrative and leadership experience.
  • A National/international leader in Nursing with excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to craft and execute a clear and inspiring strategic plan.
  • Commitment to excellence in research and scholarship, teaching, clinical practice, and service.
  • Experience recruiting and developing faculty, and supporting exceptional individual teachers, clinicians, and researchers.
  • Ability to grow and lead a vibrant research program; personal or organizational success in guiding a scientific vision, expanding support for research programs, and recruiting research faculty.
  • A record of developing innovative programs and learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Interest in and capacity to achieve success in fundraising and philanthropy.
  • Proven ability to build effective partnerships within a school, university, and broader community.
  • Ability to develop a strong leadership team and to delegate authority and hold team members accountable within a complex, evolving, and dynamic environment.

Educational Requirements/Experience

  • Ph.D., Ed.D. or equivalent doctorial degree.
  • Masters or Doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Hold an unencumbered current license or privilege to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Texas or eligibility for Texas RN licensure with timely attainment upon hire.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility in higher education, including significant experience in nursing education at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Eligible for an appointment at Professor level, with a record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Chair of a Nursing department and/or experience as a School of Nursing Associate or Vice Dean is preferred but not required.
