Staff Associate I

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Staff Associate I within the LEAP Science and Technology Center. The SA-I will use their knowledge of data science, climate modeling and data visualization to design, coordinate, and execute collaborative research projects in climate science. They will foster a collaborative, agile and open research culture across multiple groups within Columbia. The SA-I will be responsible for maintaining and documenting computing and data systems using commercial cloud computing technologies including Docker images and Jupyter hubs and evolving these systems in response to user needs.They will support educational events including hackathons, bootcamps, and coding sprints. They will proactively contribute to open-source resources to advance research objectives across multiple projects. Lastly, they will promote the use of cloud data and open science practices via educational outreach and collaboration with partner organizations.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Engages with, supports and helps execute cutting edge science projects in a collaborative and open science environment with multiple research groups.
  • Maintains and evolves computing and data systems based on commercial cloud computing including Docker images and Jupyter hubs.
  • Develop documents, examples, tutorials, and other educational materials for working with climate data in cloud-native workflows.
  • Assists with training workshops and other outreach activities with partners.
  • Works independently in a collaborative research environment; may mentor students and interns but does not directly supervise other staff.
  • Will receive general supervision. Works independently on collaborative research efforts on cutting edge science projects, develops novel workflows and documents best practices for open science practices within the lab group, within parameters set by the PI.
  • Utilized analytical skills to solve moderately complex problems based on guidelines, protocols, and procedures.

Bachelor's degree in Physical or Computational Science required. The successful candidate should have substantial experience developing scientific software and a track record of contributions to open-source Python project(s). Active GitHub profile and presence and knowledge of best practices around software documentation, testing, and continuous integration desired. Strong familiarity with cloud data storage and continuous intergration desired. The ideal candidate will have at least six months of deep experience using the Pangeo software stack (Xarray, Dask, Zarr). Experience working with ocean, weather, and/or climate data, including NetCDF and Zarr data formats, metadata conventions, analysis methods, and visualization techniques is also prefereed. Experience in working with non-technical users of data is also an asset.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled.

Appointment are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
