Temporary Archival Technician

Job Title: Temporary Archival Technician

Department: Decker Library

Division: Academic Affairs

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to (Position Title): Library Director

Work Schedule: 15 hours; Part-Time during 16 week fall and spring semester

General purpose: The Archival Technician in Decker Library works in collaboration with library staff to process, preserve, organize, and describe MICAs archives and special collections. This position also adds value to the archives and special collections through the development and implementation of programming, interpretive exhibits, and selective digitizations to tell the story of MICA.

Summary of Essential Functions:

  • Collaboratively arranges, describes, and provides access to MICA archival material.
  • Assists with outreach and engagement activities related to MICA archives.
  • Provides assistance to MICA community in accessing Decker Library materials.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the organization and description of archival records.
  • Coordinates with Collection Services Librarian to create MARC catalog records for archival materials.
  • Makes recommendations for and rehouses archival collections based on condition and need for access in collaboration with Resource Sharing and Collection Maintenance Technician.
  • Works with library staff to plan for restoration and preservation work for all material formats.
  • Participates in library outreach activities on and off campus.
  • Engages MICA community with archival materials.
  • Supports Access Services staff by providing backup on the service desk as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard archival policies and procedures for use, access, and preservation.
  • Knowledge of records management issues and practices.
  • Familiarity with ArchivesSpace.
  • Work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively with colleagues, staff, faculty, and students fostering a collegial work environment that encourages growth, inclusivity, innovation, curiosity, and rigor.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree is required.
  • At least one year of Library experience.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, problem-solving skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to set and keep deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, social justice, equity, and diversity.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with Archives or Special Collections.
  • Background in art, art history, or design.
  • Experience with community-based and collaborative approaches to archiving.
  • Experience with electronic and digital archives.

Reporting to this position: (no direct reports)

Condition of Employment:

  • Weekend and evenings occasionally needed.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment.
