Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
Fairmont State University seeks candidates for a full-time Temporary Assistant Professor of Chemistry faculty position for the academic year 2026-27 in our small, student-centered, collaborative, and ACS-approved chemistry program. Highly qualified candidates may be considered for transition to a tenure-track position. Applicants must provide evidence of competency in teaching courses such as general chemistry (major and non-major), foundational biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and instrumental analysis. In addition, the candidate is expected to participate in maintaining several of our instruments (e.g. AA, GC, FTIR, UV/Vis, electrochemistry).
Chemistry faculty teach 15 contact hours per semester (including laboratories). Faculty also mentor students in undergraduate student projects and clubs, serve on university and college committees, rotationally serve as chemistry program coordinator, help maintain instrumentation and shared laboratory space, conduct program and course assessment, and participate in department and program activities. Scholarship is expected and can take many forms.
We actively collaborate with the other Natural Science programs and share instrumentation. Fairmont State has a strong focus on student success and has been a collaborating institution on a major NSF INCLUDES Alliance award in support of rural, first-generation students. Additionally, Fairmont State was awarded an NSF S-STEM grant to improve the educational experience of academically talented low-income students in STEM fields.
