The department has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 575 majors, and a graduate enrollment of approximately 40 between the Master’s program in Athletic Training and the Ph.D. program in Kinesiology.

Faculty are research active in exercise physiology, motor behavior, physical education pedagogy, sport and exercise psychology, and biomechanics. Our commitment to cutting-edge research is supported by access to a range of laboratories and collaborative resources.

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Physiology Lab is equipped for gene expression and protein expression, cell culture, fluorescence imaging, and molecular analysis (e.g., real-time PCR). https://kind.nmsu.edu/
  • Applied Exercise Physiology Lab is equipped to support exercise physiology and human performance research. There is equipment for metabolic testing on cycle ergometers and treadmills and for measuring lactate, glucose, electrolytes, osmolality, and core temperature (in the lab and field). The lab supports strength and conditioning assessments with free weights, racks, platforms, and resistance equipment.
  • Research Cores Program Facilities which include Biomedical and Animal Research facilities, flow cytometry, and cell sorting technologies https://research.nmsu.edu/RCP.html

The department fosters collaboration across campus with programs in Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition, and Engineering, and is supported by institutional grant services and internal research funding opportunities.
