Organizational Unit Overview:
University Communication (UC) translates ECUs message into strategic and compelling communication and campaigns through the university web site, news releases, its official social media, East magazine, storytelling, production of promotional videos and video news stories along with infographics, creation and development of promotional brochures, and annual reports. The purpose is to provide strategic communication and marketing guidance and support to increase the knowledge, understanding, appreciation and support of the University and its work with broad and varied constituencies, from prospective students to identified thought leaders to prospective donors.
Through ECU News Services UC performs media relations, public affairs, internal communication and strategic communication work on behalf of the university and reports and disseminates information about events, activities, research, policies, individuals and alumni of the University, both through the media, videos, ecu.edu, the university website and through owned publications and other forums.
UC, through Creative Services, works with all university departments to conceptualize, design, develop, and produce written, audio-visual, digital and print projects to brand, communicate, and market their messages to appropriate audiences. Creative Services also provides strategic marketing advice for the university, including performing advertising buys for the university.
Job Duties:
The Visual Arts Specialist serves as a member of the Creative Services design team, providing advanced, forward-thinking visual design expertise that is essential to the universitys branding, marketing, recruitment, and strategic communications efforts. This position is responsible for translating institutional priorities and narratives into brand-compliant, high-quality visual solutions that ensure consistency, relevance, and competitiveness within the higher education landscape. Operating in a fast-paced, agency-style environment, the role collaborates closely design directors to deliver integrated creative work that directly supports enrollment, reputation management, and external engagement. As a team member within Creative Services, this position helps maintain and evolve the universitys visual identity and ensures the timely delivery of professional, on-brand materials critical to the universitys success.
Position Summary
- Develop graphic design work that plays a critical role in shaping the universitys public identity, reputation, and competitive positioning within the higher education landscape.
- Serve as a forward-thinking creative professional who actively monitors, interprets, and applies emerging design trends, technologies, and best practices specific to higher education marketing, recruitment, and institutional storytelling.
- Operate with professional judgment in a fast-paced, agency-style environment, balancing innovation with governance, brand standards, and institutional complexity.
Minimum Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
- Motion graphics (After Effects and Premiere Pro) and Canva design experience is a plus.
- Experience incorporating AI-driven design tools into creative workflows (e.g., generative imagery, layout acceleration, ideation, or production optimization).
- Advanced implementing branding systems, visual storytelling, and campaign development.
- Ability to balance creative innovation with brand governance, brand standards, and institutional requirements.
