Academic Advisor for College of Science, Engineering, and Technology
Position Announcement
The Academic Advisor for the College of Science, Engineering & Technology at Utah Tech University (UT) supports student success by providing proactive, student-centered guidance to current and prospective students. The advisor will play a critical role in helping students navigate degree requirements, explore academic and career pathways in conjunction with the CSET Career Services liaison, and progress toward timely graduation. Beyond individual student support, the advisor will collaborate closely with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure academic programs are accessible, accurate, and responsive to student needs, while maintaining the integrity and rigor of the degrees offered. This position will be supervised by the Dean of the College and the Director of College Advisement and will interface with Academic Advisement Center on student success initiatives, academic planning, etc. Information about the College of Science, Engineering & Technology, its programs, degrees, etc. can be found online at https://colleges.utahtech.edu/science/.
Responsibilities
- Provide advising related to the academic requirements for undergraduate College of Science, Engineering & Technology (CSET) programs which may include degrees in areas such as life sciences, physical sciences, technology, and/or mathematics. Specific population to be determined.
- Work with CSET dean, departments, staff, and the University Advisement Center to assist students with exploration of academic interests, degree planning, registration, and progression toward and application for graduation which can include, but is not limited to, providing feedback and assistance to students in developing a holistic education plan, educating students on university policies and procedures, fostering self-advocacy and personal responsibility, and connecting with appropriate campus resources and support services.
- Develop adequate support opportunities specific and beneficial to the assigned population in conjunction with standards in the CSET Advising Team and University Advisement Center.
- Actively participate in campus, college, department, and advisement meetings to provide support, feedback, observations, advisement perspective, and student experience in relation to university and college processes and goals.
- Collaborate and liaise with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to support the goals of the College of Science, Engineering & Technology.
- Represent advisement in UT promotional and freshman events, including freshman orientation and presentations in local high schools.
- Refer students to other campus offices and resources as needed.
- Participate in retention initiatives under direction of Academic Advisement.
- Attend professional development opportunities for advisement and serve on various university committees.
- Assist with the commencement and convocation programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
- Two years of advising or related work experience (e.g. working with a student population, in an educational environment, etc.) required.
- Proficient computer skills; willingness to learn new systems. Familiarity with programs already in use on campus such as Banner, Navigate, DegreeWorks, etc. preferred.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students.
- Strong writing and oral communication skills.
- Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with university stakeholders.
- Familiarity with college admissions guidelines, standards, and procedures, and higher education admissions counseling in general.
- Background must show ability to positively relate to multi-cultural students, first generation students, non-traditional students, and students in transition.
- Passion for STEM disciplines and familiarity with UT CSET program requirements preferred.
Supplemental Information
POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time overtime-exempt staff position. Annual salary of $44,500 for Bachelor's degree-qualified candidate and $47,750 for Master's degree-qualified candidates. depending on qualifications and experience. Desired start date of November/December 2025.
