Academic Advisor I - Part-Time
Objective
To provide individual services in the academic advisement, transfer information, and academic development activities. Provides academic advisement on curriculum/academic programs requirement of Blinn College and other institutions of higher education.
Required Quals Summary
Bachelor's Degree; Excellent communication skills, past college academic advising experience preferred
Special Notes To Applicants
Maximum of 19 hours per week as needed during peak advising times of the year.
Principal Accountabilities
- Assist prospective and currently enrolled students with developing an educational plan of academic or technical courses to achieve their intended educational goal
- Provide academic advisement towards completion of Blinn College academic and technical program requirements as well as to transferring institutions
- Interacts with parents and guardians of students while ensuring that the students' FERPA rights are protected
- Remain current on academic guidelines, college policies, and transfer requirements
- Maintain accurate and consistent records of academic advising activities
- Assist with New Student Orientations, Engineering Academy advising days, and other registration activities as needed
- Perform other related tasks as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree
Minimum Competencies
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Computer literacy and ability to learn proprietary software
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, parents, and the general public from diverse ethnic and socio-cultural backgrounds
- Ability to work in a collaborative work setting
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in a related field; Three years experience in higher education; Two to three years academic advising experience at the community college level
Preferred Competencies
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Banner software, Excel, and other office suites; Ability to multi-task

The Advising office listed hours are from 8am until 5pm. On occasion student advising may exceed the normal work hours and the Academic Advisor is expected to remain on premises until the student(s) is finished with their advising session. In addition the Advising office hosts various student events which may take place after hours and/or on a Saturday.
