Brief Summary of Work for this Position: The Temporary Advisor jointly supports the Office of Education Abroad and the Office of International Students and Scholars. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Advise short-term and visiting international students (VIS) and administer UNCW's Visiting International Student (VIS) program.
- Utilize Slate and Terra Dotta to process applications, issue immigration documents, and ensure compliance with Department of State and Department of Homeland Security regulations.
- Advise students on education abroad scholarship opportunities and communicate awards and amounts to applicants.
- Present to prospective education abroad participants at information sessions.
- Develop, market, and coordinate inbound summer visiting international student programs.
- Assist with international student orientations, events, and programs.
- Work collaboratively with the education abroad team for event planning and coordination, particularly for events like the World's Fair, Study Abroad Fairs, and Pre-departure Orientations.
- Collaborate with the Outreach Coordinator on education abroad outreach efforts and organization, including timing and placement of campus marketing materials.
- Assist with education abroad returnee and Study Abroad Ambassador program management including posting event signups and coordinating volunteers.
- Assist with front desk responsibilities, including greeting students and directing student inquiries.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience working with international education initiatives; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Two plus years of experience in student advising, immigration advising, or program coordination.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently.
- Able to plan and manage time effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills both oral and written.
- Ability to occasionally work nights and weekends.
- Excellent command of the English language, written and oral, and effective interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- International student/scholar advising experience.
- Knowledge of SEVIS and J and F regulations.
- Proficiency in a language in addition to English.
- Knowledge of foreign higher education systems.
- Experience with Terra Dotta & Slate.
- Experience working on programming for study abroad returnees.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a strong ability to work autonomously and take initiative with limited direct supervision.
Work Hours: 8am-5pm
Work Days: Monday-Friday
Hours Per Week: 35-40 hours
Anticipated Hiring Range: $20-$25/hour
Special Instructions to Applicants: Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
