Job Description Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean for Curriculum, Scheduling and Student Affairs, and under the daily supervision of the Dean of Academic and Career Services, the academic advisor will work as part of the advising team to provide academic advisement for College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) students and units that serve the College of Arts and Sciences. The academic advisor will serve as a CAS representative at college or university-sponsored campus events, professional conferences and other activities, as assigned, such as Summer Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) and student recruitment events (e.g., Leo Fridays, Spotlight Weekend). The academic advisor will aid in course selection, review, and navigation of degree requirements, make referrals to campus resources to support students and support students to develop short and long-term goals in consultation with their major academic advisor. The candidate will facilitate retention strategies, will participate in revising and updating relevant academic advising documents, and will collaborate with the University Registrar to support ongoing maintenance and accuracy of the University student information systems and databases. The academic advisor will assist in evaluating and clearing seniors for commencement and will support students who withdraw or take a leave of absence when they return to complete a degree. The position may require work after typical business hours and on weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the disciplines housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Equivalent of at least two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • Experience working on a college campus, preferably as an academic advisor
  • A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures of the university in relation to assisting students, gather and analyze data to inform advising interventions and campaigns, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations related to campus-wide stakeholders, and exercise courtesy, alertness, and good judgement when responding to others.
  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work, multi-task, complete assignments in a timely fashion, work under pressure.
  • Must be computer literate and proficient in standard word-processing and database software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrate ability and interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience with Degree Audit, Banner 9, D2L Brightspace, and Campus Labs.

Specific Duties:

  • Academic Advising: Provides individual and group academic advising to CAS students and students in related programs by mapping out degree completion plans that include general education, major and graduation requirements. Analyses course requirements, graduation requirements, and transcripts. Implements creative solutions to degree completion while keeping with academic policies. Serves as an expert resource to faculty and staff advisors, instructors, and campus staff. Utilizes campus support services to effectively refer students. Utilizes current technology and resources to advise students. Accommodates student traffic by providing “walk-in” opportunities for students. Maintains constant interaction and timely follow-up with students. Percentage of Time: 45%
  • Student Persistence/Retention: Collaborates with Advising Team, Student Accounts, Registrar, faculty and campus resources, as needed to develop retention strategies. Identities “at risk” populations such as, but not limited to, non-registered students, students in poor academic standing, students with poor mid-term progress, students with back balances, students identified in the early alert system, etc. Serves as a liaison for administrative offices that impact student persistence and retention goals. Works directly with students to facilitate timely registration and degree completion and reports outreach outcomes. Percentage of Time: 25%
  • Programming and Training: Facilitates and presents at training workshops for faculty advisors, orientation Week Leaders, Resident Advisors, and campus Staff on advising-related topics. Conducts academic enrichment sessions and registration preparedness workshops for traditional undergraduates. Lead presentations and information sessions in cross-straining sessions with other departments who are responsible for matriculating or advising students. Percentage of Time: 5%
  • SOAR Planning and Implementation: Assists with planning and coordination of SOAR in advance of incoming fall and spring freshmen and transfer students. Percentage of Time: 5%
  • Office and Data Management: Utilizes strong analytical skills and attention to detail, including strong computer skills and experience in retrieving student data from BANNER via Cognos, MS Access, or other report retrieval tools. Percentage of Time: 10%
  • Graduation check for Commencement Clearing: Runs degree evaluation for students, reviews outstanding requirements, and discusses any substitutions or transfer credits pending. Follows up with advisors and students to ensure all requirements are met. Reaches out to active students who were cleared for commencement out did not earn a degree and assists seniors whose degrees were not posted to advise on how best to complete requirements. Percentage of Time: 10%

Salary Range
Maximum: $70,304
Minimum: $69,368.37
