The Opportunity

The University of Toledo Foundation is hiring an Assistant Director of Development for the University of Toledo Medical Center & College of Health and Human Services. The Assistant Director will serve as the lead fundraiser for their respective portfolio, responsible for building strong donor relationships, expanding the pipeline of support, and elevating the visibility of each area’s impact. With the flexibility to engage in regional discovery work and occasional travel, this role offers a meaningful chance to shape the future of the University through strategic, donor-centered fundraising. The Assistant Director will split their time equally between two University units, the University’s new College of Health and Human Services (HHS), which combines the universities Allied Health Professions and the School of Nursing, and The University of Toledo Medical Center, focused on Grateful Patient Fundraising. The position will have an indirect reporting structure to the Dean of HHS. As the Foundation values collaboration, this is an in-office role four days a week.

Candidate Profile

The Assistant Director will be responsible for the following: Maintaining a portfolio of up to 120 assigned grateful patient prospects with a focus on moving prospects to donors and ensuring continued annual support. Cultivating and soliciting donors for special projects assigned to support UToledo Health initiatives. Initiating at least 40 contacts a month, at least 10 of which will result in an in-person or virtual visit, for purposes of discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Coordinating with the supervisor if a written gift proposal for prospects is needed or if the prospect or donor shows a higher level of fundraising interest and/or capacity. Managing a network of relationships with prospective donors. Facilitating and coordinating all communication with these prospects and helping with patient access and appointment coordination when necessary and appropriate. Promoting positive relationships with these prospects and donors. Evaluating various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommending the most suitable for a particular donor. Assisting with the strategy for and creation of written communications from various medical center departments and/or units appropriate to a donor’s interests. Must be able to develop interpersonal relationships with multiple constituents as well as both academic and clinical providers and staff. Integrity, impeccable ethics, initiative, enthusiasm, and the ability to establish trust and credibility. Demonstrate commitment and ability to: Understand HIPAA laws and adhere to compliance standards. Provide quality customer service. Plan, organize and remain accountable for actions. Problem solve utilizing critical thinking skills. Function in a confidential manner. Collaborate with other staff. Travel commensurate with standard expectations for fundraising activity and contact to reach donors and prospects locally & regionally. Performs additional development-related activities/efforts at the request of the manager. May perform other duties as assigned. In addition, strong candidates will offer: Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 1-3 years of advancement, sales or related experience, with a preference given to experience in the healthcare field. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the importance of University Development activities to maintain lasting and positive donor relationships. Experience in higher education or healthcare fundraising preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for these roles are $63,140 –$78,980 and will be determined by the Foundation based on the candidate’s years of experience. The University of Toledo Foundation offers a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, with no cost to employees for dental and vision plans. Employees can choose between a PPO or High Deductible Health Plan, with the Foundation contributing up to $3,000 annually to HSA. Additional benefits include employer-paid life and AD&D insurance, optional FSAs, and up to 7% retirement contributions through a 403(b) plan. Educational assistance is available for UToledo courses, along with support for professional development. Employees also receive generous paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, 11 holidays, and a paid winter break.
