The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Office of Philanthropy, is currently recruiting for three Major Gift Officer 2 positions. These are frontline fundraising roles focused on face-to-face individual giving for several of UMB's premier professional schools. Each position will manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and advance philanthropic engagement through strategic relationship-building and solicitation efforts.

The three positions are aligned as follows:

  • Major Gift Officer 2 - Law and Nursing: This role will focus on fundraising for the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
  • Major Gift Officer 2 - Dentistry and Social Work: This role will support the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and the School of Social Work.
  • Major Gift Officer 2 - Graduate Studies and Pharmacy: This role will serve the Graduate School and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Each fundraiser will apply specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts typically acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Responsibilities will be accomplished using independent judgment, creativity, discretion, and analytical thinking, while resolving issues and significant matters on behalf of management.

The fundraiser will work with a portfolio of donors and qualified prospects. They must develop an in-depth understanding of each school's programmatic areas and funding priorities in order to align donor interests with institutional priorities. They will lead specialized mini-campaigns in addition to fundraising for school priorities. The position requires travel for face-to-face discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects and donors. It is a hybrid role, combining both remote and on-site responsibilities.

Primary Duties:

  • Develops a set of annual metrics for each School comprised of: Proper Portfolio Size; Number of Proposals Presented; and Number of Substantive Visits/Contacts.
  • Independently manages a portfolio of individual gift prospects across two schools, building tailored engagement strategies for each.
  • Leads face-to-face discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities, advancing relationships with potential and current donors.
  • Designs and executes mini-campaigns to support school-specific fundraising priorities, using creativity and data-informed approaches.
  • Contributes individually and in collaboration with others to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Manages short-term projects with minimal supervision and may participate in longer-term initiatives.
  • Conducts in-depth discovery work to qualify new prospects and identify high-potential individuals for long-term cultivation.
  • Learns and conveys the unique programmatic strengths and funding needs of each school to effectively match donor interests with institutional priorities.
  • Works collaboratively with staff from the Office of Philanthropy, the School of Nursing, and the Carey School of Law.
  • Uses discretion and analytical thinking to resolve complex problems and propose solutions aligned with institutional policies.
  • Adheres to, and may help shape, school standards, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: Four (4) years of philanthropy experience, including at least one (1) year managing prospects in a higher education or comparable fundraising setting. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong understanding of professional fundraising principles and practices; Knowledge of applicable laws, policies, and ethical standards in philanthropy; Ability to develop and maintain donor relationships through persuasive communication and personalized outreach; Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Proficiency in relevant fundraising and CRM systems and MS programs; Ability to travel regularly and work in a hybrid environment; Commitment to the UMB Core Values: Respect and Integrity, Well-being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, Innovation and Discovery. Hiring Range: $90,000 - $105,000, Commensurate with education and experience.
