WRITER
Position Summary:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a Development Writer for the UAB Medicine/Heersink School of Medicine Advancement team. The primary responsibility of this position is to create personalized proposals, correspondence, and stewardship/impact reports on behalf of the Heersink School of Medicine Advancement team. The writer will assist with developing and enhancing the print and digital content with the goal of strengthening relationships with donors to UAB. This position will work closely with other members of UAB Advancement, Heersink School of Medicine and other University personnel to translate the Heersink School of Medicine's mission and goals into substantial achievements in fundraising and general advancement. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Constituent Engagement within the Heersink School of Medicine. This position is full-time, hybrid eligible after the probationary period.
General Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, performs research, writing, editing, and production tasks. Prepares publication(s) for printing; coordinates design, content, layout, publication and distribution of newsletters, magazines, video and informational/promotional materials. Proofs copy and approves photography, illustrations and graphics. Obtains client and printer concurrence. Provides technical and topical consultation. Produces audio, video and broadcast media materials. Maintains master information files and databases. Assists in identifying potential markets and promoting department services and capabilities. Makes presentations as required. Assists with design and production of special assignments.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plans, researches and writes professional and personalized proposals and stewardship/impact reports for donors and prospects.
- Develops and writes other fundraising and marketing collateral, including appeals, one-pagers, annual reports and more.
- Partners with a graphic designer to coordinate creative direction on select projects, ensuring that photography and design enhance and support the content.
- Partners with a graphic designer to consider photography, illustrations, and graphics, ensuring alignment with project vision and goals.
- Ensures that all content meets the highest standards of quality and accuracy and conforms to UAB style requirements.
Pay Range:
$47,665 - $70,000
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English or a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Knowledge of AP Style preferred
- Project management skills
- Time management skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work well autonomously and within a team
- Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization
