Position Overview

The Assistant Director of International Student Life supports international and global nomad students with their successful transition to and engagement at Carleton College. As part of the Office of International Student Life, the Assistant Director will create programs for and provide services to the approximately 200-250 international students and global nomads at Carleton. This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend commitments.

Compensation

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $58,600 and $60,600. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision of student employees, including the International Peer Leaders.
  • Develop and manage intentional cultural and social programs for international and domestic students to increase interaction among students of different cultures.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of International Student Orientation and International Fest.
  • Collaborate with international student organizations, departments, and other offices to further create global citizens on campus.
  • Assess the efficacy of International Student Life programming and adapt programming based on the current needs of students.
  • Provide cultural, personal, and regulatory advising to a diverse set of international students with attention to problem-solving, crisis management, and resolving student issues.
  • Advise international students on matters of housing, transportation, employment, taxes, insurance, health, banking, driver’s license, SSN, and other cultural matters.
  • Support compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), helping with advising, data maintenance, and document storage.
  • Serve on campus-wide and divisional committees to advocate for international students and third culture kids living abroad.
  • Help maintain the ISL website and social media accounts.
  • Support the UWC scholar program, including assistance with grant reporting.
  • Process reimbursements for Named International Scholars.
  • Additional job responsibilities as needed.

Education/Experience/Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years of directly related experience working with international students and/or other marginalized populations.
  • U.S. Citizenship and/or Permanent Residency to be able to work in SEVIS.
  • Experience supervising student workers and/or professional staff.
  • Possess proven experience in event planning and activities management from start to finish.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects under frequent deadlines.
  • Read, understand, and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Possess a working knowledge of personal computers and databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate policy and regulatory nuance, including maintaining confidential data.
  • Welcome, value, and nurture people of all backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, as well as support and promote an environment that accepts differences.
  • Be a self-motivated, enthusiastic, energetic, and creative individual with the ability to meet and interact effectively and courteously with international visitors, students, college personnel, and members of the community.
  • Possess strong human relations and customer service skills and a clear appreciation for diverse nationalities.

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Experience working with F-1 and/or J-1 students.
  • Prior experience working with and/or managing budgets.
  • Intercultural experience living or working in another country.

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
