Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO program designed to assist first-generation, lower-income, and students with disabilities in navigating and succeeding in higher education. The program provides individualized support, resources, and advocacy to promote retention, academic success, and graduation.
The Assistant Director of Student Support Services provides direct support to SSS participants through advising, counseling, and program coordination. This position is responsible for coordinating disability services, ensuring compliance with program objectives, and contributing to the overall success and persistence of SSS students. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director of Student Support Services, faculty, staff, and student leaders to advance the College’s mission of equity, access, and success.
Key Responsibilities
- Student Advising & Counseling
- Advise and counsel students on academic, personal, financial, transitional, social, and career issues.
- Administer and interpret assessment tools (e.g., College Student Inventory).
- Provide outreach to students on probation or with academic concerns, including referrals to tutoring and other resources.
- Collaborate with faculty and academic advisors to support student success.
- Assist Director with research in preparation for submission of grant proposals.
- Disability Services Coordination
- Review medical, psychological, or educational documentation for students requesting academic assistance.
- Participate in interactive intake interviews with new participants to establish reasonable accommodation plans.
- Coordinate and implement testing accommodations, secure note takers, and oversee assistive/reading technology.
- Ensure compliance with disability accommodation guidelines and provide advocacy as needed.
- Peer Contact Supervision
- Assist the Associate Director with hiring and training peer contacts/mentors.
- Meet regularly with student leaders to provide guidance and address concerns.
- Records & Data Management
- Document all student interactions in program database.
- Collect, analyze, and report program evaluation data.
- Student Opportunities
- Research and share information on internships, scholarships, summer employment, and research opportunities.
- Communication
- Maintain ongoing communication with students, faculty, and external partners via email and professional networks.
- Program & Event Development
- Design, coordinate, and supervise cultural and educational trips to enhance student development.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, social work, special education, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in academic advising, student support, case management, or disability services.
- Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of federal TRIO/SSS programs and reporting requirements is beneficial.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education.
- Knowledge of ADA and Section 504 regulations
