The Opportunity:

The Department of Animal Sciences at Washington State University is seeking a qualified and exceptional, tenure-track Assistant Professor to provide institutional leadership in beef production. This faculty member will be responsible for conducting basic and applied research on beef cattle production systems, with a focus on growth, reproduction, genetics, nutrition, wellbeing, management, regenerative systems, precision agriculture, and/or other relevant fields. The position will be located at the WSU main campus in Pullman, WA and is an appointment in the College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS). The position requires a PhD in Animal Science, or a related field, with experience in and knowledge of the US beef cattle industry. The individual will work closely with other researchers, industry partners, and Extension agents to design, implement, and disseminate research projects that address the needs and challenges of the beef cattle industry. This faculty member will have responsibilities in teaching (40%), research (40%), and Extension (15%) and service (5%).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duties of the position are to develop and execute a strong teaching, research, and extension program in beef production.
  • The successful candidate will establish a competitive research program that is successful in securing extramural funding, along with training graduate students, and publishing peer-reviewed publications.
  • The candidate will teach undergraduates in courses related to animal sciences, beef production and management and will teach at the graduate level in their area of expertise.
  • Develop open communication with stakeholder groups and act as a liaison along with other Extension personnel to the Washington State beef industry. Facilitate cross disciplinary work with departments, research Extension centers, and county Extension offices in concert with industry representatives and stakeholders in the development and implementation of innovative beef cattle Extension programs.
  • Develop Extension programs utilizing a variety of delivery methods to reach intended audiences that focus on transformational education to improve the regional beef cattle industry and transfer research results into practical applications for beef cattle producers.
  • Communicate research findings to stakeholders, producers, processors, or consumers through publications, presentations, and workshops, as well as present research at local, national and international meetings and conferences. It is also expected that research results will be published in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate and assist in college-wide events, activities, committees and perform other duties as deemed necessary.

The candidate is expected to serve as the advisor of a beef related student club and/or cooperative. The area of research of the successful candidate will be focused on addressing critical issues in beef production, such as growth, management, breeding, feeding, commercial cow/calf, yearling/stocker, feedlot and finishing. Departmental, college and university service are expected. The successful candidate must have a commitment to the recruitment, retention, development, and enrichment of a diverse faculty, staff and student community.

Departmental research resources include WSU feed plant, beef center/cattle feeding laboratory/feedlot, meats laboratory, Knott dairy center, and modern laboratory and teaching space. In addition, relationships with the livestock producer organizations exist and these relationships present opportunities for collaboration in research, teaching and outreach. There are also exciting interdisciplinary research and teaching opportunities with many departments and centers across the WSU system.

Additional Information:

This is a 9-month Academic Year, permanent full-time tenure-track position. This position may be eligible for up to 2 months' summer salary, conditional on successful performance and funding.

Salary: (Commensurate with experience and qualifications):

9-Month Base Salary: $75,000 - $90,000

Summer Salary: $16,667 - $20,000

Total Possible Annual Salary: $91,667 - $110,000

Required Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in animal science, animal physiology and/or beef production
  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and interest in beef production, management and the beef industry
  • Ability and desire to teach/mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Capacity to establish and maintain and externally funded research program
  • Record of peer-reviewed first author publications of beef cattle research
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills appropriate for their audience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral training and/or equivalent experience
  • Experience in teaching animal sciences courses
  • Extramuraally funded research complementary to existing Department, College and University strengths
  • Success working in a team environment
  • Knowledge of current practices, standards of care and new technologies in beef production and management
  • Experience working with the allied beef industry
