Job Description
The Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology at Idaho State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in criminology beginning August 2026. While we are open to a wide range of teaching and research interests with a criminological focus, we are especially interested in a candidate whose expertise lies at the intersection of criminology and mental health/medical sociology. Applicants who can teach courses in penology, community corrections, mental health and criminology, and related topics are especially encouraged. Teaching duties for this position are a 3/3 load and may include in-class, broadcast (synchronous online), online (asynchronous), and hyflex (online and in-person at the same time) formats. The successful candidate will be expected to grow and maintain an active research program, including publishing in scholarly journals and submitting grant proposals, and to fill service roles in the department, college, university, and community.

The four programs in the department - Sociology, Criminology, Social Work, and Gender and Sexuality Studies - are all interconnected and support a dynamic community of collaborative teaching, research, and service. Faculty in the department use a wide variety of methods and approaches to contribute to many areas of research and learning, including the community and environment, child welfare, mental health, sexual diversity, and forensic social work.

Key Responsibilities
- Teach core and elective sociology and criminology courses.
- Undertake continued research in your specialization, including publishing in scholarly journals and submitting grant proposals.
- Service to the department, college, university, and community.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in sociology, criminology, or criminal justice (ABDs are eligible to apply but must have degree in hand by June 30th, 2026).
- Demonstrated ability or potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Evidence for potential excellence in teaching in a variety of formats, including synchronous and asynchronous online classes.
- Ability to teach core and elective courses in sociology and criminology.

Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Research focus at the intersection of criminology and mental health/medical sociology.
- Ability to teach courses in penology, community corrections, and related topics.
- Ability to teach courses in mental health and criminology or medical sociology and criminology.

Additional Information

Salary will be between $64,000 and $69,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
