Department Summary The UCLA Civil Rights Office ("CRO") identifies, communicates, investigates, and works to uphold civil rights protections for students, staff, faculty, and other academic personnel, as well as patients at UCLA Health. CRO works to advance civil rights protections for all Bruins and ensure that members of the UCLA community can study, work, live, and receive medical treatment free from discrimination, harassment, and sexual violence. Position Summary UCLA is seeking a strong leader to serve as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Civil Rights. This pivotal role oversees the University's efforts to foster an inclusive, equitable, and respectful campus environment by ensuring compliance with federal and state civil rights laws, including Title VI, Title IX, ADA, Section 504, and related statutes. The AVC leads a team of dedicated professionals who manage investigations, policy, education, and prevention initiatives. Qualifications Specific knowledge and understanding of Title VI, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 / º 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title IX and other federal and state laws pertaining to nondiscrimination. (Required) Demonstrated experience in reviewing and revising policies and procedures to improve and create uniformity, consistency, and fairness across a deeply fragmented terrain. (Required) Familiarity with general higher education policies, practices, and customs, including UC policies on discrimination, harassment, and retaliation on protected social categories such as age, race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, etc. (Required) Demonstrated experience, expertise, and ability to review sensitive investigation reports and exercise judgment in making findings regarding whether violations of non-discrimination, sexual violence, or sexual harassment policy or law have been committed. (Required) Demonstrated administrative experience, management, supervision, and overseeing operations in a Civil Rights and/or Higher Education environment. (Preferred) Ability and willingness to collaborate thoughtfully with multiple institutional partners, ranging from faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members. (Required) Ability to manage professionals who have strong but sincere disagreements in policy, procedure, and structure. (Required) Ability to supervise staff to complete investigations in an efficient and timely manner, with willingness and ability to generate and provide metrics that demonstrate adherence to policy-required or suggested deadlines. (Required) Ability to effectively mediate conflict and communicate across multiple constituencies, while demonstrating empathy and understanding in situations concerning sensitive matters. (Required) Exceptional skill in developing and delivering training and education programs about discrimination. Ability to effectively conduct training and education programs, workshops and other presentations for small and large groups.
