Job Description:
*This position is eligible for up to one day remote work per week.*
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Associate Dean of Students is strategic in cultivating an active, vibrant campus life that enhances the overall student experience and contributes to student learning, development, and engagement. This position ensures adherence to the code of student conduct and other institutional policies, directs students of concern and student intervention efforts, and collaborates with staff and faculty to promote student well-being, retention, and student success. The Associate Dean of Students is an advocate for all students and helps to ensure access to resources and opportunities. This is a critical position to the Dean of Students leadership team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the development, implementation, and periodic review of student-related policies to ensure compliance with institutional standards and applicable laws; collaborate with campus departments to interpret and enforce policies consistently, and recommend revisions to address emerging issues and support student success.
- Coordinate student conduct process and oversee adjudication on all levels of cases.
- Oversee conduct software system; review, assign, and track cases.
- Recruit and train members of the student conduct hearing board and coordinate hearings as needed.
- Advocate for students in crisis; provide resources, support and referrals.
- Work in collaboration with Dean of Students staff in co-chairing the CARE Team.
- Work with parents regarding student conduct issues and other well-being concerns.
- Collaborate with faculty regarding student concerns (attendance/long term illnesses, etc.).
- Assist students with leave of absence processes, voluntary and involuntary.
- Serve as a liaison with ROTC program.
- Serve as an active member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT).
- Supervise the Director of Student Engagement, Director of Recreation, Program Manager for Leadership Development, and Case Manager.
- Support and serve as a liaison between the Office of the Dean of Students and off-campus students.
- Serve as a liaison between the Office of the Dean of Students and Newport/Middletown Police departments regarding student conduct matters.
- Work closely with local community agencies concerning University issues.
- Participate in the assessment of student development needs and assist with the planning and delivery of programs coordinated by the Dean of Students' office that address those needs.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve in the administrator on-call rotation with DOS leadership staff.
- Serve on University-wide committees as requested.
- Perform other duties as may be requested by the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students

Requirements:
Required:
- Master's degree
- Minimum of 5 - 7 years' of progressively responsible experience in student conduct, student support/student care, and/or student engagement
- Must be able to effectively support diverse learners.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and families to advise and support students through difficult and complicated situations.
- Experience in managing crises effectively and collaboratively.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Must be able to manage situations confidentially, exhibit sound judgement and the ability to make difficult and timely decisions with integrity.
- Ability to utilize technology and institutional platforms in the documentation of records and support of students.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, social work, counseling, or related field.
- Significant experience working with higher education judicial affairs and student disciplinary protocols.
- Significant experience supervising and mentoring professional staff at the entry and mid-level.
