Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current base salary range for this position is $64,228- $122,272. 'Off-scale' salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Spring 2026

Position duration: One-year term position, with the possibility of renewal.

Position description

Berkeley Law is committed to fostering a supportive academic environment that allows students to achieve their full potential. Effective study methods are crucial to law school success, and the goal of the Academic Skills Program is to ensure that students have the necessary skills to succeed as law students and as lawyers.

The Associate Director will participate in all aspects of the Academic Skills Program. During the summer, this includes coordinating and leading or co-leading bar prep workshops, and working closely with students who are statistically at risk of failing the exam. The Associate Director will also coordinate and lead or co-lead sessions during Berkeley Law's Pre-Orientation Program, a week-long program for a small group of incoming law students. During the academic year, the Associate Director will coordinate and lead or co-lead skills workshops, coordinate the student tutor program, and meet with students one-on-one. The Associate Director will also assist in developing and implementing new programming.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Co-coordination of the Academic Skills Program's student-facing programs, including skills workshops, orientation programs, and other special events;
  • One-on-one work with students and alumni;
  • Providing feedback on practice answers, both for law school exams and for the bar exam;
  • Presenting information about study skills and exam-taking techniques to various audiences;
  • Hiring, training, and supervising student tutors;
  • Assisting with bar exam preparation for students and alumni during the academic year and summer months;
  • Assisting with developing and implementing new programming; and
  • Ongoing professional development (for example, attending conferences and/or professional workshops) in the fields of legal education, academic support, and bar success.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • J.D. Degree or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • At least three years of post-law school professional experience
  • At least one year of supervisory experience

Preferred qualifications

  • At least five years of post-law school professional experience
  • Familiarity with U.S. law schools and legal organizations
  • Previous teaching experience and/or equivalent facilitation experience
  • Familiarity with the California bar exam and successful preparation strategies
  • Ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
