The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life (OSFL) at Indiana University Bloomington is a foundational pillar of the student experience, with a history dating back to 1845. OSFL oversees one of the nation's largest and most influential Greek-letter communities, comprising approximately 10,000 students representing 27% of the undergraduate population. These students are members of 70 active chapters organized into 4 governing councils: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Association (PHA), the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).
Job Summary
The Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life is the operational leader and primary steward of the IUB Greek community. This executive role provides the highest level of leadership for the mission, vision, and long-term sustainability of the department. The Director acts as an architect of community, leveraging campus support systems to drive vibrancy, enhance student safety, and ensure a high-performing, fiscally sound organizational structure.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Serves as a high-level strategic partner and advocate for the Greek experience as a primary driver of student retention, leadership development, prevention programming and promoting involvement and belonging among current and interested members in the community.
- Establishes the vision for OSFL to ensure it serves as a flagship model for the IUB 2030 Strategic Plan, specifically regarding transformative student engagement and success.
- Serves as the university's lead consultant and content area expert on the intersection of student social life, high-risk behavior mitigation, and organizational governance.
- Oversees the development and implementation of practices and procedures specific to sorority and fraternity life, which includes collaboration with the Student Involvement and Leadership Center for re-registering, updating and educating on the OSFL policies, education and compliance pertaining to event management expectations, and implements internal policies, program requirements, and safety protocols prioritizing student safety and ensuring university compliance.
- Responsible for managing the assessment of the Greek Fee (generating $900,000+ annually) and overseeing the distribution of the OSFL Programming Budget, ensuring cost containment and rigorous stewardship of university resources.
- Oversight of foundation accounts, distributing approximately $150,000 annually in scholarships and educational programming funds. Responsible for communication with current and prospective donors in collaboration with the IU Foundation.
- Leads and directs a team of 8 professional staff including Associate Directors, Assistant Directors, and administrative support; and up to 20 part-time employees providing direction, guidance and strategy for the office. Responsible for hiring, onboarding, conducting performance reviews, and providing support for professional growth and development. Provides support and guidance to Associate Directors who oversee position responsibilities and project management within their respective areas.
- Provides executive oversight of systems management to enhance operational excellence, this includes and is not limited to using Baseline for program evaluation, utilization of BeINvolved for re-registration and student events, Maxient usage for chapter coaching tracking, and providing support to staff who oversee recruitment technology and analytics, specifically CampusDirector, to ensure equitable growth and data-informed decision-making for thousands of potential new members.
- Serves on the Hazing Prevention Coalition steering committee as an active member providing support and engagement pertaining to hazing prevention and response efforts for sororities and fraternities.
- Works in close partnership with the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS) and the Office of Student Conduct to address organizational health, student needs, and policy violations.
- Oversees the Standards of Excellence annual assessment and awards program promoting values-integration through academic achievement, program development, brotherhood/sisterhood, philanthropy, service and risk management
- Serves as a liaison on the Care Team coordinated by the Dean of Students Office. Responsible for providing context pertaining to sorority and fraternity life and giving staff in OSFL the resources for navigating Student situations related to health, well-being and student safety.
- Serves as the primary university liaison to Inter/National Headquarters and the full spectrum of industry governing bodies. The Director ensures IUB remains at the forefront of national standards, legislative advocacy, and inclusive excellence within the fraternity and sorority profession.
- Facilitates engagement with alumni advisors, House Corporation Boards, and community volunteers to ensure the long-term viability of chapter facilities.
- Leads a proactive communication strategy for parents and families, providing transparency and resources to one of the university's most engaged constituent groups.
- Oversees curricular courses taught by OSFL staff and serves as a content area expert on university-wide committees.
- Serves as the primary liaison with IU Public Safety and leads the departmental response to behavioral incidents, coordinating with IU Police and General Counsel to ensure a safe and stable environment.
General Responsibilities
- Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define student life methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority student life projects/initiatives.
- Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase student life initiatives.
- Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
- Manges high level assignments and allocation of student life resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale student life projects with a wide audiences in support of academic initiatives.
- Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
- Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry student life standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
- Works collaboratively with other student life leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
- Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to student life.
- May serve on various campus or cross-functional committees to share student life best practices.
