Division Administrator

The Divisions of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) and Allergy & Clinical Immunology (ACI) are two of thirteen divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. The Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine includes over 80 instructional, clinical, and research track faculty, as well as clinical instructors and research fellows. PCCM supports a broad range of clinical activities, including high-acuity inpatient services across multiple units, advanced procedural programs, and outpatient care at several locations including the main campus, West Ann Arbor, Brighton, and Northville. The Division of Allergy & Clinical Immunology consists of 21 faculty members across clinical and research tracks, with expertise spanning adult and pediatric allergy, asthma, immunodeficiency, and related conditions. Together, the divisions support robust clinical operations, nationally recognized fellowship programs, and a growing research portfolio.

In partnership with the Division Chiefs, the Division Administrator manages the fiscal, personnel, operational, and administrative activities of both divisions. High-level responsibilities include providing leadership to ensure execution of strategic plans, developing and implementing business models for program growth, overseeing academic and clinical administrative operations (including space, finance, and staffing), and ensuring effective pre- and post-award research administration. The Division Administrator plays a critical role in partnering with Michigan Medicine hospital and ambulatory leadership, representing both divisions and the department in institutional initiatives, and driving operational excellence to support the faculty's missions in research, clinical care, and education.

Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a trusted strategic partner to both Division Chiefs, contributing to the development and implementation of divisional priorities and long-range plans.
  • Align administrative operations to support the tripartite mission (clinical care, research, education) across PCCM and ACI.
  • Lead integration of administrative, operational, and financial processes to ensure efficiency while honoring the specialized needs of each division.
  • Partner with Michigan Medicine hospital and ambulatory leadership to advance divisional programs, address operational challenges, and implement institutional initiatives.
  • Represent both divisions on institutional committees, workgroups, and strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with Michigan Medicine priorities.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing administrative team across PCCM and ACI.

Clinical Operations Oversight

Oversee complex clinical operations, including:

  • Multiple inpatient services, including high-acuity critical care units, managed by PCCM.
  • Robust outpatient and procedural programs across both divisions.
  • Multidisciplinary, subspecialty clinics in Allergy and Immunology.
  • Collaborate with physician clinical leads to optimize patient access, scheduling efficiency, provider templates, and resource allocation.
  • Partner with Michigan Medicine's hospital, ambulatory, and procedural leadership to ensure operational excellence, readiness for regulatory reviews, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development and implementation of new clinical programs and strategic service expansions.
  • Facilitate effective revenue cycle management, ensuring accurate charge capture, billing compliance, and education for faculty and APPs.

Financial & Business Management

  • Direct all financial operations for both divisions, including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and stewardship of divisional resources.
  • Provide proactive financial modeling to support strategic decision-making, program development, and faculty incentive programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all institutional policies, internal controls, and reporting requirements.
  • Oversee research administration in collaboration with departmental resources, supporting both basic and clinical research growth.
  • Manage space planning, facilities oversight, and laboratory operations for research and clinical programs, ensuring optimal utilization and compliance.

Human Resources & Faculty Affairs

  • Lead administrative support for faculty affairs processes, including recruitment, credentialing, appointments, promotions, and performance management, across both divisions.
  • Partner with Department HR and Faculty Affairs to support staff and faculty, fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, and inclusivity.
  • Manage complex staffing structures, ensuring alignment with divisional priorities, operational demands, and financial resources.
  • Provide infrastructure support for advanced practice providers (APPs), research fellows, post-docs, and medical trainees in collaboration with relevant institutional offices.
  • Support faculty and staff development, wellness, and engagement initiatives tailored to the unique environments of PCCM and ACI.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Business, Health Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in academic healthcare or complex medical environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, operations management, financial oversight, and process improvement.
  • Proven success in building effective partnerships with physician leaders, hospital/ambulatory executives, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong leadership skills, including team development, conflict resolution, and organizational change management.
  • Experience supporting high-complexity clinical operations, particularly inpatient, procedural, or subspecialty ambulatory services.
  • Knowledge of academic medicine, research administration, and faculty affairs processes strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, develop system-wide efficiencies, and support diverse stakeholder needs across two distinct divisions.
