Environmental Health and Safety utilizes a two-level Health Physicist structure, with placement determined by the candidate's demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, and relevant experience.

As a Health Physicist I, you will:

• Conduct contamination surveys, leak tests, and compliance report preparation for the Radiation Protection Program.
• Perform inspections of laboratories using sealed and unsealed sources, x-ray producing devices, and neutron sources.
• Perform bioassays.
• Respond to minor radiation exposure and contamination incidents.
• Assist with commissioning and decommissioning of radiation use locations.
• Prepare shipments and receive radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices in compliance with regulations.
• Coordinate dosimetry and area dose monitoring.
• Support institutional laser safety oversight efforts, including assisting with inventory and user guidance.
• Ensure accurate, compliant recordkeeping and documentation.
• Provide training, guidance, and support to stakeholders for radioactive materials.

As a Health Physicist II, you will:

• Assess and approve deliverables in support of the Radiation Protection Program, such as contamination surveys, leak tests, and compliance reports.
• Draft Radiation Protection Plans and shielding reviews.
• Investigate and formulate recommendations related to incidents, exposures, illnesses, or property damage involving the use of radioactive materials or lasers.
• Assist in the administration of dosimetry and area dose monitoring.
• Analyze dosimetry data, identify and investigate unusual exposure results, and prepare documentation of findings.
• Assist in the maintenance of and amendments to the radioactive material licenses and registrations issued by the state.
• Collaborate with and advise Principal Investigators during the licensing and registration processes for radioactive material and laser use.
• Ensure accurate, compliant recordkeeping and documentation.
• Provide training, guidance, and support to stakeholders for radiation and laser safety.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Health Physicist I:

• Bachelor's degree in physics, health physics, engineering, radiation biology, medical physics, other related field of study, or equivalent education/experience.
• 1+ year of experience with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, which may include educational, internship, research, or employment settings.
• Knowledge of fundamental radiation principles, units, detection methods, and protection strategies.
• Ability to conduct field monitoring, contamination surveys, and inspections.
• Ability to interpret and apply basic regulatory requirements.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Skilled in maintaining accurate and organized records.
• Must have a valid driver's license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Health Physicist II:

• Bachelor's degree in physics, health physics, engineering, radiation biology, medical physics, other related field of study, or equivalent education/experience.
• 2+ years of experience with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation.
• Strong knowledge of radiation principles and regulatory standards applicable to sealed/unsealed sources, radiation-producing devices, and laser systems.
• Familiarity with licensing, registration, and/or compliance requirements related to radioactive materials or laser use.
• Ability to formulate and document individualized and complex reports regarding unique operation.
• Ability to plan, design, and implement radiation and laser protection plans and compliance management plans and procedures.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
• Ability to make sound judgments, take ownership of decisions, and act with confidence.
• Must have a valid driver's license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

Health Physicist I:

• Bachelor's degree in physics, health physics, engineering, radiation biology, medical physics, or other related science.
• Experience with open source or sealed radioactive materials, x-ray and neutron-producing devices, or Class 3B/4 lasers.
• Experience with laboratory safety practices and hazardous material handling.
• Experience providing guidance or collaborating with researchers, faculty, or other regulated users.
• Knowledgeable in principles and regulatory standards of various types of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
• Relevant EHS certification or credential.

Health Physicist II:

• Bachelor's degree in physics, health physics, engineering, radiation biology, medical physics, or other related science.
• Experience with open source or sealed radioactive materials, x-ray and neutron-producing devices, or Class 3B/4 lasers.
• Experience supporting environmental health and safety or compliance programs in a university, hospital, or government environment.
• Experience providing guidance or collaborating with researchers, faculty, or other regulated users.
• Knowledgeable of ancillary regulations impacting environmental health and radiation safety operations such as export controls, waste management, or general laboratory safety.
• Certified Health Physicist.
• Certified Laser Safety Officer.
• Radiation Protection Technologist.
• Radiation Therapist.
• Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
• Other relevant professional certification or credential.

Posted Salary: Salary commensurate upon experience
