Laboratory Administrative and Facility Operations Manager
Position Purpose
Reporting to the Dartmouth Cancer Center Associate Director, Administration & Scientific Affairs, performs a variety of functions to manage the shared occupancy of DCC laboratories, by faculty from multiple departments, and the provision to occupants of access to DCC shared equipment, lab space, and common research support facilities. Advises faculty, and informs their staff and students, regarding application of institutional policies and procedures (e.g., hiring, purchasing, IT support) to research-related activities.
Dartmouth Cancer Center is looking for a facilities manager whose primary focus will be on startup and disposition of laboratory spaces within the research side of the center. This position manages a multidisciplinary team across administration and research. A successful candidate will be highly organized, able to speak to the research capabilities of the laboratories, build relationships, and be comfortable with frequent visits to lab spaces.

- 2 to 5 years of supervisory experience, including mentoring and training, as well as experience in facilities management
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and decision-making skills
- Ability to optimize tact and diplomacy in order to obtain compliance with regulatory or departmental or institutional policies.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a scientific field
- Solid understanding of research methods and operation.
- Experience with Dartmouth College systems (e.g. Halogen, BioRAFT, RaDar, GraphPad, Prism).
- Experience with SharePoint.
Description
Laboratory and Facilities Operation and Regulatory Compliance:
- Assumes responsibility for the daily management and facilities operation of the Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC) -research laboratory floors and other DCC-assigned space.
- Ensures that departmental or institutional compliance requirements are met and sustained for non-regulatory laboratory operations.
- Coordinates with and acts as onsite monitor for the department of Environmental Health and Safety to ensure that research operations are conducted in compliance with site-specific procedures and all applicable institutional, state, and federal regulations. Serves as a liaison during announced or unannounced site audits (including Safety Drills) by institutional and regulatory authorities.
- Serves as Cancer Center Fire Marshall and liaison, regarding departmental and institutional safety committees, and conducts periodic safety inspections of assigned facilities and equipment. Provides yearly training for faculty, and staff on Institutional Alarm Codes and the required response.
- Acts as representative for assigned space and the needs of space users while interacting with site groups. Communicates and advises on space needs, housing of freezers and equipment. Maintains floorplans and space assignments. Assists with space survey and works with the Dartmouth Purchasing Office / Asset Management for periodic verification equipment location and ownership.
- Identifies and responds to facilities-related or equipment/maintenance issues and resolves problems in collaboration with departmental or institutional leadership. Ensures that action is taken to correct all unsafe conditions. Participates in policy design and implementation as related to DCC laboratory facilities.
Percentage Of Time: 30%
Laboratory Services Shared Resource:
- Facilitates and optimizes Laboratory Services Shared Resource through planning and administration of usage, providing feedback to senior leadership on needs, performance metrics, and identification and implementation strategic initiatives.
- Manages invoicing and billing for Research Assistants and Tech time services.
- Maintaining and operating shared resource site and user accounts.
- Schedules and experimental planning: Plans project(s) duration with PI requesting service needs, equipment, and consumable purchases through laboratory start-up programs.

Laboratory Operation Administration:
- Acts as Lab Manager/Purchasing Agent facilitating the full life cycle of individual laboratories from start up to disposition for faculty and researchers.
- Provides operational oversight, support, and troubleshooting throughout the cancer center laboratory floors and laboratory space assigned to DCC.
- Manages and maintains shared instrument resource. Coordinates purchases and service contracts (as applicable) of new shared instrument(s). Maintains daily inspection of shared instruments; performs timely preventative maintenance and orchestrates repairs, replacements and re-certifications of shared instruments. Coordinates annual recertification of lab assigned biocontainment and fume hoods. Works in RaDar to manage shared resource site equipment information and changes, reservations and ordering. Leads monthly training sessions.
- Participates in the development and implementation of SR policies and procedures. Oversees DCC Shared Equipment and usage, facilitating centralization where feasible, and works with laboratory representatives on decentralized shared instrument access and maintenance.
- Works with finance and funds teams to create, track, and expense all available funds. Creation of business plans, commitment tracking, and financial cycle of the PIs lab start up. Facilitates inter-institutional collaboration in the laboratory start up process.
- Monitors DCC, Dartmouth, and Dartmouth Health Medical Center non-laboratory policy compliance. Maintains access lists for assigned spaces. Maintains documentation of policies, protocols, and procedures for DCC/Geisel/Dartmouth.
- Acts as facility manager working with DH Engineering and Geisel Facilities for DCC laboratory spaces. Reports and maintains all work orders with Geisel facilities administrative staff & DH Engineering. Responsible for issuing project requests to both DH Engineering and Geisel Facilities.

Laboratory Personnel Administration:
- Works with the DCC Administrative Services Manager to ensure proper administrative functions related to employment, rotations, and internships are followed. Maintains lists of current laboratory members.
- Conducts orientations related to the physical space, building, and laboratory layouts as well as facilitates access to Share Resources through RaDar training. Responsible for physical layout orientation of new personnel. Holds monthly training sessions for use of RaDar and ordering in the shared resources.
- Responsible for all sponsored accounts Dartmouth College and RaDar related within the Dartmouth Cancer Center.
- Official GraphPad representative for Dartmouth College research labs. Works with GraphPad and RaDar to issue licenses to research staff and invoicing for purchases through RaDar. Maintains yearly account renewal.
- Chairs, and coordinates, biannual (minimum) DCC Lab Manager meetings and ensures sharing and implementation of best practices and procedures and coordinates monthly Shared Resource seminars.

Management:
- Manages a multidisciplinary team of facilities, finance, research (LSSR), and administrative staff. Collectively knocking down barriers to research support and laboratory startup.
- Facilitates mentoring and training of administrative and resource personnel.
Percentage Of Time: 10%
