Job Summary

Full-time members of the faculty are professional educators who have the primary responsibility of instruction and management of assigned classes. Additional responsibilities include fulfilling the Metropolitan Community College mission, vision, values, strategic plan, Board of Trustees’ charges and educational philosophy, and primary goal of providing a quality education for all students attending the college.

Final compensation offer will be determined, based on various factors, such as academic credentials, relevant work and instructional experience.

Disclaimer: This position is full-time for the 2026-2027 Academic Year only. The successful candidate will be assigned exclusively to the evening program and is expected to work evening hours as part of their regular schedule.

Essential Functions

  • Deliver effective instruction - Provide quality instruction, which is reflective of current discipline standards and is accurate, relevant, and engaging using college – approved curriculum and resources
  • Assess student learning - Demonstrate reflective practice, including assessment of student learning. This includes ongoing formative assessments, as well as official departmental assessment
  • Manage classes and learning environments - Foster a positive classroom-learning environment by presenting information in a way that is inclusive to all learners, including the assurance of section 508 accessibility
  • Promote continual improvement as part of the cycle of teaching and learning
  • Support learning through student engagement by incorporating pedagogical strategies such as active learning, authentic and problem-based activities, and other successful teaching strategies into classroom instruction
  • Provide student guidance - Help students develop academic habits for college success
  • Pursue professional development by staying current in academic field
  • Actively participate collegially in department, campus, cross-college, discipline specific, district, and community service activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned to provide high-quality learning experience for students, including participating in commencement, attending college functions, etc.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Generalist Police Science Instructor:

  • Employed 5 years as a full time peace, military, or federal law enforcement officer and have a baccalaureate degree;
  • OR
  • Having successfully graduated from a POST recognized Instructor Development Course (otherwise, probationary) and either an Associate's degree in a qualifying field or be actively working towards a Bachelor's degree. Qualifying Fields are:
    • Police Science Technology
    • Law Enforcement
    • Public Administration
    • Criminal Justice
    • Criminology
    • Psychology (with an emphasis in public safety)
    • Sociology (with an emphasis in public safety)
    • Public Safety Administration
    • Public Safety
    • Homeland Security
    • Emergency Management

Specialist Police Science Instructors must provide sufficient information that they are qualified to instruct in a specific curricular area, or possess a valid, current, 3rd party license to instruct in specialized areas, and graduated from a POST recognized IDC, or have been granted a waiver (or probationary).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, or Business Administration and fifteen (15) years of experience in law enforcement
  • Investigative experience (minimum of 5 years)
  • Command level experience (minimum of 1 year)
  • Ten (10) years of instructional experience (full- or part-time) specific to academy instruction at a college, university, or basic training center
  • POST Specialist Instructor Certification in the area of Firearms and/or Defensive Tactics
  • Experience using assessment techniques to promote teaching and learning excellence
  • Demonstrated experience with current pedagogical and instructional methods
  • Demonstrated experience with utilizing a variety of classroom technologies, both inside and outside the classroom
  • Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with all constituencies of a differing community
  • Demonstrated interest in and passion for teaching community college students
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically requires feeling, grasping, hearing, keyboarding, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly.
