Deakin is seeking a Lead, Business Intelligence Data Engineering to oversee the design, development and operation of enterprise data engineering platforms that power high-quality analytics, reporting and insight-driven decision-making across the University.

About the role

Deakin isn't just adopting AI – we're building it. With Deakin GEM now live and our AI Factory, a multi disciplinary AI squad, accelerating capability across the institution, ambitious work is underway across multiple streams.

As Lead, Business Intelligence Data Engineering you will lead the evolution of Deakin’s data engineering environment, ensuring robust, secure and scalable data platforms support organisational priorities. You will play a key role in delivering automated, high-quality data pipelines, improving data processing efficiency and strengthening enterprise business intelligence capability.

This role blends technical leadership with people leadership — fostering innovation, operational excellence and continuous improvement across data engineering practices.

We need a Data Engineer who can build robust BI pipelines and infuse them with AI, from predictive analytics to LLM-powered exploration and creating data products that empower business users to ask smarter questions and get better answers.

You will:

Lead the design, development and maintenance of enterprise data engineering platforms and tools

Ensure data quality, security and governance standards are embedded across the enterprise data warehouse environment

Drive automation of data workflows to support scalable, efficient data processing

Oversee end-to-end data pipeline delivery across ingestion, transformation and serving layers

Lead capability improvement initiatives and evaluate emerging data technologies

Coach and inspire team members to deliver high-quality data engineering outcomes

Translate business requirements into effective, practical data solutions

Engage stakeholders to communicate the value of insights and support evidence-based decision-making

About you

You are an experienced data engineering or business intelligence leader who thrives in complex, enterprise environments. Most importantly, you are passionate about using data to create meaningful outcomes and empowering others to succeed.

You’ll bring:

Postgraduate qualifications or extensive relevant experience

Proven experience managing data engineering, warehousing and ETL/ELT platforms

Knowledge of feature engineering and ML data pipelines

Experience integrating AI/ML models into BI workflows

Understanding of predictive analytics and anomaly detection

Familiarity with embedding models, LLMs for data exploration

Demonstrated ability to improve customer experience through data and insights

Strong understanding of data governance, quality and security practices

Experience leading technical teams and driving continuous improvement

Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
