Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Manager, Strategic Communications and Media to join Communications and Government Relations, Engagement, Chancellery Division.

The Manager, Strategic Communications and Media leads a team of media, social media and communications professionals dedicated to strengthening QUT's reputation and strategic positioning. Reporting to the Director, Communications and Government Relations, the Manager leads the development and execution of communications strategies while establishing governance frameworks, workflows, and capabilities that enable the university to communicate with impact across all stakeholder groups.

What you need to succeed

  1. Education, training and/or experience equivalent to completion of postgraduate qualifications in communications, public relations, journalism, or related discipline, with substantial experience in strategic communications and media relations within complex organisations - preferably higher education, government, or large corporate environments.
  2. Proven leadership capability including demonstrated success recruiting, managing, developing, and inspiring high-performing communications teams. Evidence of building team capability, fostering performance and creating positive, collaborative team culture.
  3. Demonstrated experience establishing governance frameworks, systems, and workflows that enable scalable, efficient, quality communications delivery. Track record of process design, continuous improvement, and organisational capability building.
  4. Strong record of developing and implementing integrated communications strategies, content strategies, and media campaigns across traditional, digital, and social channels that achieve measurable outcomes aligned with organisational objectives.
  5. Exceptional communication skills including outstanding writing, editing, and verbal communication capability across formats and audiences. Proven ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling narratives that engage diverse stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrated ability to manage high-pressure situations including crisis communications, issues management and competing priorities. Evidence of sound judgment, composure under pressure, and ability to make rapid decisions with incomplete information.
  7. Strong stakeholder management capability with proven ability to build productive relationships, influence effectively, negotiate successfully, and partner across organisational boundaries. Experience working with media, senior executives, and diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  8. Strategic thinking combined with operational excellence. Ability to see the big picture while maintaining attention to detail. Evidence of translating strategy into action and achieving results.
