PhD Position: Effective Governance for Cybersecurity and Online Safety
Job Summary: This PhD project focuses on the legal role of 'trusted flaggers' in EU content moderation under the Digital Services Act (DSA). It is part of the interdisciplinary Effective Governance for Cybersecurity and Online Safety (EGOS) project, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The research addresses notice-and-action mechanisms, trusted flaggers, and compliance with the DSA, involving collaboration with partners like Delft University of Technology and Radboud University.
Responsibilities: Conduct research on the interpretation of trusted flagger provisions, the division of responsibilities between trusted flaggers and online platforms, their role in non-mandated situations, and the potential use of AI. Culminate research in a PhD thesis (monograph or collection of papers). Collaborate with supervisors Pieter Wolters, Frederik Zuiderveen Borgesius, and Raphaël Gellert, as well as researchers from the Department of Private Law, Radboud Business Law Institute, and iHub.
Qualifications and Requirements: Hold a Master's degree in law, preferably specialized in ICT law. Specific knowledge of content moderation and the DSA is preferred but not required. Excellent command of written and spoken English; working knowledge of Dutch is beneficial. Demonstrate interest and ideally experience in interdisciplinary research, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a preference for on-campus work as a team player.
What the Employer Offers: A temporary employment contract of 1.5 years (1.0 FTE), extendable to 4 years upon positive evaluation. Starting salary of €3,546 gross per month based on a 38-hour workweek, increasing to €4,241 in the fourth year. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, extra days off (up to 41 annually), flexible working hours, various leave arrangements, pension plan, training opportunities, and a 34% discount on university sports and cultural activities.
