Job Information

The Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom (ASC) at Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowships. ASC seeks exceptional, independently motivated early-career scholars who will research, teach and participate in the vibrant life of the Adam Smith Center in Miami. Fellowships are highly competitive, and applicants’ research proposals must clearly demonstrate engagement with the Center’s mission and academic interests—including economic liberty, free markets, entrepreneurship, academic freedom, classic liberal thought, individual liberty and the institutional foundations of prosperity.

The Center

The Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom is a world-class, independent university think tank dedicated to advancing the principles of economic freedom, individual liberty and limited government through research, education and public engagement. The Center promotes interdisciplinary scholarship and fosters dialogue on the role of free market economies and their impact on freedom and human prosperity in the United States and around the world.

The Fellowship

Postdoctoral Fellows are members of energetic and collaborative intellectual communities at both ASC and FIU. Reporting to ASC’s Associate Director, Postdoctoral Fellows actively contribute to the Center’s mission and activities through:

  • Conducting original and independent research aligned with the Center’s mission and academic focus areas;
  • Presenting on their research at the end of each semester, and submitting publishable drafts of their work at the end of each academic year;
  • Teaching at least one course (or one academic seminar series) each academic year; and
  • Contributing to Adam Smith Center events, policy briefings and public outreach initiatives.

In addition, Adam Smith Center Postdoctoral Fellows receive opportunities for professional development as they prepare for the next phases of their careers.

Screening of applications will occur as positions become available and continue until positions are filled.

To be considered for an Adam Smith Center Postdoctoral Fellowship, please submit the following materials:

  • Cover letter detailing: (1) specific research project(s) that engage(s) the Center’s mission and academic interest areas; (2) why ASC is the best fit for your proposed research and how you intend to contribute to the academic life of the Center; and (3) teaching experience, if any;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Writing sample; and
  • Contact information for three academic references.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to Job Opening ID 536241 at careers.fiu.edu and attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and summary of research specialization. This pool will remain open until September 30th, 2026.

Terms

  • Competitive salary and benefits;
  • Office space, research support, professional development opportunities and access to FIU university-wide resources; and
  • One-year appointment, renewable at the discretion of the Associate Director for a second (and final) year, based on performance and funding.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Economics, Political Economy, Public Policy, Government, International Relations, Business, Law or a related field (the doctorate must be officially conferred by the start date of the fellowship);
  • Demonstrated scholarly interest in economic freedom, entrepreneurship, classic liberal thought, free markets, individual liberty and/or the institutional foundations of prosperity;
  • Outstanding analytical, writing and communication skills;
  • Commitment to academic excellence and public scholarship;
