Program Manager, Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations
Job Description Summary
The Program Manager will be responsible for providing administrative and managerial support to the Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations, a grant-funded initiative in the office of Penn Global. The Project principally develops recommendations for U.S. policies toward China from next-generation China scholars and analysts.
Reporting to the Project Director, the Program Manager will provide key administrative and managerial support to all aspects of the Project, including but not limited to event support, development and editing of written outputs, multimedia production, support for educational initiatives related to the Project, grant reporting and stewardship, etc.
Ideal candidates will have excellent administrative skills and management capabilities; deep knowledge of and familiarity with China; working level proficiency in Mandarin Chinese; and ability to travel domestically and internationally, including to China. The Program Manager will need to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and interpersonal savvy in working with diverse audiences of scholars, experts, policy professionals, students, and others.
About the Penn Project
The Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations, a grant-funded initiative in the office of Penn Global at the University of Pennsylvania, principally develops recommendations for U.S. policies toward China from next generation China scholars and analysts, who are selected as Project Fellows through a competitive process. The Project also convenes international cohorts of next generation China scholars and analysts, to develop recommendations for their home countries and regions' policies toward China. On campus, the Project involves Penn undergraduates through its Student Fellows program and hosts occasional China-related events. In addition, the Project maintains an active webinar series and sponsors the China Studies podcast. Job Responsibilities
- Event support (domestic and international): execute and staff annual in-person Project events in Philadelphia, Washington DC, China, and other countries.
- Written outputs: help to develop and edit Project Fellows' policy papers; create Project blog and solicit / edit short commentaries for publication.
- Multimedia production: brainstorm programming, invite guests, and produce Project webinars and podcasts, as well as closed-door virtual events.
- Educational initiatives: support Project's Student Fellows program and staff China travel for undergraduate policy task force (taught as a Penn Global Seminar).
- Grant development and stewardship: help to draft grant applications and reports to Project funders.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required; 2 to 3 years post-graduate work experience preferred.
- Demonstrated interest and background in U.S.-China relations.
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to multitask. Excellent writing, copy-editing, and digital media skills.
- Ability to work in person on campus at the University of Pennsylvania.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally, including to China.
- Working-level proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is preferred.
