Research Assistant (Student)
Summary
The Research Assistant will support a faculty-led research project exploring the history of the Black church, visual culture, and photography. The position involves conducting archival research at major historical repositories, including the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution Archives' Scurlock Collection.
This role is ideal for a motivated student with an interest in African American history, archival work, and visual culture. While minimal prior research experience is required, candidates should have completed at least one introductory African American History or African American Studies course.
Responsibilities
- Conduct archival research in local historical repositories.
- Review and summarize relevant scholarly literature.
- Provide weekly progress updates to the faculty supervisor.
- Assist in developing a project website.
Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work
Part-Time. 10–12 hours per week. Flexible scheduling to accommodate repository access and student availability.
Required Education and Experience
Current student in good academic standing. Completion of at least one introductory African American History or African American Studies course. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Interest in historical research, African American history, and visual culture.
