Job Description

The Resident Hall Director (RD) is responsible for the administration of one or more residence halls housing between 200 and 450 students and actively supports the Department's mission by making them inviting, intellectual, and inclusive communities. The RD supervises 12 Resident Assistants and 1 Assistant Resident Director. The RD shares in a weekly living area on-duty rotation and the departmental recess duty rotation. The RD is responsible for a specialty area (i.e. programming, staff development, or administrative) and is the liaison for this area for all student and professional staff on their living area.

This is a live-in position and the incumbent must reside in their assigned on-campus apartment designated by the Department of Residential Life. This is a ten-month college year position and obligation dates are provided to staff based on the academic calendar.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve on call and on duty on a weekly basis to respond to all emergencies, mental health, and enforce University policies. Live-in professional staff responsible for all emergencies.
  • Community building and conflict resolution
  • Facilities management
  • Student conduct adjudication
  • Provide programming and resource for all students
  • Serve on department, University-wide, and/or divisional committees
  • Lead and manage direct reports/team providing guidance, support, and performance feedback to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to the University's mission. Lead employees for maximum performance and dedication, fostering a positive and productive work environment. Complete performance management feedback and goals timely and per requirements, offering constructive feedback and developing improvement plans.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

  • Reports to: Assistant Director or Quad Coordinator
  • Supervises the following positions: Resident Assistants and Assistant Resident Director (Graduate Assistant)
  • May supervise employees as assigned (if no direct reports at time of filling position)

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role
  • Ability to live in the provided on-campus apartment for the duration of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration or related field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Prior experience in college or university residence halls
  • Experience with supervision
  • Experience with crisis management

Working Environment:

The working environment is a blend of a typical office environment, residence halls, residential or program spaces, and outdoor campus locations. Incident response may include policy violations, mental health, facilities emergencies, or other time-sensitive matters that impact the physical demand, mental demands, or working environment.

The working environment for this role is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring a blend of office-based tasks, residence hall response, team collaboration, and occasional campus-wide engagement. The work setting includes both administrative office spaces, residential or program locations for training, staff supervision, and event execution. Given the nature of Residential Life, there is often a need for flexibility and adaptability, as responsibilities shift throughout the academic year, with peak periods during residence hall openings and closing, specialty area key time periods, duty, key administrative operations, and during unexpected emergency response. Working evenings and weekends is part of the working environment as a live-in professional.

Physically, the role may involve occasional standing or walking for events, meetings, and campus programs, with periods of office-based tasks that require extended sitting and computer use. The physical demands are moderate and include moving between various office spaces, residential areas, and campus event venues. This includes regularly walking and using stairs to conduct rounds of residence halls and respond to incidents indoors and outdoors.

Mentally, the role is dynamic and fast-paced, demanding, and requires multitasking, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making. The role also involves significant interpersonal interaction, including training, supervising staff, difficult conversations, customer service, and policy enforcement. It also includes problem solving and decision making during emergency response to incidents, which demands strong communication, emotional intelligence, and conflict-resolution skills. The ability to work under pressure, handle emergencies, and respond to unforeseen challenges is essential.

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Residence Hall Director, SL2, $42,995
