Position Summary
The primary function of this position is to create safe, comfortable, and thriving communities that foster a strong sense of belonging and focus on student learning. As an integral member of the team, Residence Hall Directors are full-time, exempt, live-in professionals who oversee one or more residence halls housing up to 1,000 residents. Special emphasis is placed on shaping the residential experience by facilitating the residential curriculum within their communities, as well as supervising various levels of student staff, advising student groups, and supporting desk operations. The incumbent will be an active and engaged member of the department who is committed to growth and high-quality work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Higher Education or related field OR Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years of applicable full-time experience.
- Previous experience in Housing and Residence Life.
- Previous experience working with a curriculum model.
- Experience supervising student staff members.
- Experience advising student leaders.
- Served in a crisis response structure such as an on-call/duty rotation.
- Experience of managing a budget.
- Demonstrated experience with student care and follow-up.
- Experience serving on departmental, divisional, or university committees.
Duties/Responsibilities
Student Staff Supervision and Development (40%)
- Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate various student staff positions, which may include but are not limited to graduate residents, resident assistants, desk assistants, and conference assistants.
- Provide ongoing mentorship and support to student staff through regular one-on-one meetings, staff meetings, in-service sessions, and consistent, constructive feedback to promote personal and professional growth.
- Develop, implement, and assess departmental training efforts for student staff, including instruction of the undergraduate staff training seminar and facilitation of professional development sessions aligned with departmental priorities.
- Foster accountability by establishing clear expectations, addressing concerns promptly, and ensuring staff adherence to departmental and university policies and procedures.
- Oversee administrative supervision tasks, including performance evaluations, tracking and documenting staff progress, and maintaining accurate records of supervisory activities.
- Support residence hall desk operations, including but not limited to supporting the supervision of desk staff, key control, access control, mail operations, basic security support, and dissemination of information.
Community Development & Administration (30%)
- Implement the Dawg Path Residential Curriculum by creating, facilitating, and assessing educational programs and initiatives that enhance student learning and foster community development.
- Host, execute, and plan active learning and traditional area events, utilizing facilitation guides to ensure alignment with departmental goals and learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with campus partners to bring intentional programming, resources, and support services to the residence hall community.
- Advise and support community councils, including recruitment, training of student leaders, and oversight of council projects, events, and budget management.
- Promote a sense of belonging within the residential community by actively engaging with residents and staff, recognizing that effective community development requires a mobile and visible presence.
- Manage administrative responsibilities, including overseeing the purchasing process, and maintaining a community council budget to support community efforts.
- Respond directly to students, parents, faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders to resolve issues, clarify policies, and foster a supportive residential experience.
Crisis Response & Student Support (20%)
- Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to emergencies, critical incidents, and other urgent matters, including during holidays and break periods.
- Address student concerns such as behavioral issues, wellness checks, and roommate conflicts, providing follow-up, support, and referrals to appropriate resources.
- Serve as an administrative hearing officer for community guide violations, upholding community standards and fostering community accountability while ensuring resolution and continued support.
- Maintain thorough, timely documentation related to incidents, conduct processes, and student support efforts in accordance with departmental standards.
- Demonstrate leadership during crisis situations, following established emergency response protocols.
- Support, communicate, enforce and abide by all University and department policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations.
- Be knowledgeable of established protocols designed to guide responses to emergency and other unexpected events.
Departmental Initiatives (10%)
- Serve on departmental and University committees, task forces, working groups, and professional development opportunities.
- Lead and participate in special projects, planning, and assessment efforts that align with the mission of University Housing.
- Participate in all community opening, closing, and transition-related activities.
- Coordinate with the appropriate staff in facilities and security to ensure that maintenance, custodial, and security services meet departmental standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned, when consistent with the purpose of the position.
