Residential Supervisor

Job Summary

Upward Bound is a federally funded program to assist low-income youth in preparing for college. The program includes intensive academic enrichment for students in grades 9 through 12 and a college orientation (Bridge) program for recent high school graduates. Participants reside in the University residence halls and receive instruction in language arts, financial literacy, foreign language, mathematics, and science. Supervised recreation, guidance and counseling, career exploration, community service, and career exploration are also part of the summer experience. Residential Supervisors will work various hours and be available to students at various hours. Housing and most meals are provided at no cost to camp staff.

Responsibilities

  • Live in the University Residence Halls with high school students participating in the Upward Bound program and be on duty twenty-four hours per day, Sunday evening through Friday evening, for the duration of the six-week program.
  • Provide on-site support, supervision, and direction to Camp Counselors; ensure that Counselors are meeting the expectations of their jobs; communicate daily with Director, Academic Advisors, and Counselors; call problems to the attention of Director and/or Academic Advisors.
  • Resolve problems between Counselors and/or students. Mediates situations and determines whether further action is necessary.
  • Attend daily staff meetings with Counselors and advisors and weekly staff meetings with instructors.
  • Participate in activities with students; assists Counselors with supervision of students, planning and implementation of activities, transportation of students, and supervision and monitoring of study halls, computer labs, etc.
  • In the event of a medical emergency, consults with Counselors to assess the seriousness of the situation and the necessity of medical treatment. Contact appropriate persons (Director, Advisors, parents, etc.).
  • In the event of a teacher's absence, provide classroom supervision or identify counselors to supervise classes.
  • Communicates with Housing Residential Education regarding issues related to door access, linen schedules, etc.
  • In the event of a student's early withdrawal, oversee the room inventory, collection of keys, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with adolescents from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Available for the duration of the program, including the required training before the beginning of the program.
  • Driver's license and good driving record required.
  • Taking University coursework or having other employment is not approved.

Preferences

Persons who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in tutoring, peer counseling, supervision, first aid emergencies, and/or residential programs

Special Instructions

This is a temporary position. This role will run from June 16th to August 1st. Weekly hours may exceed 20 hours per week.
