Position/Role Overview
The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Hair and Makeup Supervisor to join its Performance Operations department. Reporting to the Costume Shop Manager, the Overhire Hair and Makeup Supervisor is directly responsible for working with designers, actors, and crew members to provide exceptional hair and makeup services for the current production.
The Overhire Hair and Makeup Supervisor has a passion for beauty, a creative eye, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure. This position supports the production process ensuring clients have accurate and consistent hair and makeup as created by the appropriate designers.

Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the Costume department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
Core Capabilities, Primary Duties, and Responsibilities
- Provide hair and makeup services for actors as needed, including but not limited to applying makeup, styling hair, and installing hair extensions and/or wigs
- Consult with actors to determine their hair and makeup needs, potential allergies, and their knowledge of hair and makeup practices.
- Communicate effectively with actors, designers, and Costume Shop Manager to ensure their satisfaction with the services provided.
- Assist in maintaining the Costume Shop's inventory of Hair and Makeup products and tools.
- Participate in production strike as outlined by the Wardrobe Supervisor and Costume Shop management, including cleaning makeup brushes, washing wigs, disposing of unhygienic products, and restoring inventory.
- Pay close attention to actors' needs, especially any reported discomfort or adverse reactions to their hair or makeup, and indicate any incidents to stage management and the Costume Shop Manager.
- Follow all notes documents, paying close attention to shop management's instructions.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Prior experience as an Hair and Makeup Artisan and/or Supervisor
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of hair, makeup, and beauty products, trends, and techniques
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Arts or equivalent professional experience
- 2+ years prior experience as an Hair and Makeup Artist
- Experience in an academic environment/working with students or young professionals
Work Mode
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
Hybrid work arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the role and operational needs. Any such arrangement must be discussed and approved in advance by the appropriate division lead or their designee.
Salary Range
$30.00/hour
