Temporary Part-Time Instructor of Emergency Management - Unsolicited
Job Summary/Basic Function:
The department of Earth Sciences is accepting applications for a Temporary, part-time instructor responsible for teaching online in both 7 week and 15 week course terms for the Masters of Science in Emergency Management program.
The selected candidate will teach graduate courses in the MS Emergency Management degree program. The MS Emergency Management degree is designed to produce exemplary industry professionals with cross-disciplinary skills. Topics taught within the curriculum include professional writing, risk communication, emergency management planning, business continuity, GIS applications, social dimensions of disaster, mental health and trauma, as well as terrorism and homeland security.
In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment.
The purpose of this posting is to generate a pool of qualified faculty. Applications submitted will be reviewed on an as needed basis based on enrollment. Anyone meeting the qualifications may be contacted for an interview and potentially hired when a need exists. Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Emergency Management or related discipline.
- Evidence of ability to successfully teach diverse student populations.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrate willingness to foster EPPIIC core values among students and colleagues to further enhance the national distinction of Millersville's Emergency Management programs (EPPIIC Values at Millersville University).
- Experience working with the latest technology and online tools.
- Successful interview.
- Successful completion of three background checks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD or ABD in Emergency Management or related discipline.
- Specialty certifications in emergency management.
- Practical experience in emergency management and disaster preparedness.
- Certifications in FEMA NIMS (ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800).
- Experience in teaching/conducting exercises and training events.
- Strong all-hazards understanding of emergency management and disaster preparedness.
- Mentoring experience.
Essential Functions:
Working Conditions and Physical Effort – (Essential Functions)
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment in an online format.
- Ability to: sit or stand while teaching; speak clearly; communicate via writing exceptionally well; understand verbal communication (read and understand verbal messages); stoop or bend to pick things up.
- Must be able to lift/pull/push up to 10 pounds without assistance.
- Must be able to occasionally lift/pull/push heavier items with assistance.
- Teach courses online at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, discussions, using online tools and/or equipment and/or other appropriate tools appropriate modes of education delivery.
- Able to record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the delivery of instruction.
- Use computer for email, obtain information on websites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, college, university and community.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risks.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.

- Class schedule and modality (face-to-face, online, blended, etc.) is set by the dean of the college.
