Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Tribal Education Coordinator, the Tribal Education Assistant is responsible for assisting the Tribal Education Coordinator with day-to-day office administration and tribal student support as well as special projects as needed to support the department. This position works closely with tribal higher education programs and tribal community initiatives.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Tribal Education

  • Assists in Coordinating and scheduling meetings and events with college and tribal programs
  • Assists with ongoing projects with local reservation schools
  • Meet with and help support tribal students
  • Assist and coordinate with faculty and staff
  • Meet regularly with Academic Affairs and Student Service Administrators
  • Assist in ongoing projects regarding ITECC
  • Works closely with tribal programs, for example Tribal Fish & Game, Tribal Historical Preservation Office, Tribal Health Programs, etc.

Institute of Tribal Learning

  • Assist with ongoing tribal education and community events
  • Assist and plan events for the Tribal Wisdom Society
  • Work with various tribal entities for scholarly stories and historical preservation
  • Work with faculty and staff on cultural methods of teaching
  • Assist with planning and support with interagency Law Enforcement meetings
  • Keep current on local tribal events

ITECC

  • Assist in efforts to continually make ITECC a more comfortable place for students
  • Plan community events
  • Oversee contemporary tribal issues to be displayed on the ITECC kiosk
  • Assists with Stewart Collections

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of AA degree from an accredited higher education institution.
  • Knowledge of history and contemporary issues of the Wind River Indian Reservation.
  • Strong computer and analytical Skills.
  • Strong Attention to detail.
  • Strong community and intertribal development skills.
  • Knowledge of local tribal culture and their respective history.

Experience

  • Three years of responsible experience performing duties and tasks related to the essential functions.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Will need a valid drivers license Desired Qualifications.
  • This is an on-site position (Mon-Fri 0800-1700) located in the ITECC building.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of good etiquette and positive public relations skills.
  • Working knowledge of college services to enable appropriate assistance and referrals.
  • Commitment to developing a culture of expert service.
  • Highly effective interpersonal communication skills, including a willingness to learn new processes.
  • Ability to promote a positive atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation both with students and College staff.
  • Ability to relate with a diverse group of people in a professional, helpful manner and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
  • Ability to exercise patience and to diffuse conflict.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including listening for unstated questions and providing support and encouragement.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality related to student information.
  • Possess excellent grammar, spelling, punctuation and basic mathematics skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet applications, specifically Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Applications for Education (Mail, Drive, Calendar), and Ellucian Colleague.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer to produce or compose formal documents, records, or reports.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment.

Level of Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Tribal Education Coordinator.

Equipment Used

Standard office equipment including personal computer, calculator, scanners, copy machine, and telephone.

Physical Requirements

Tasks require variety of physical activities, which do not generally involve muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and light lifting. Regular talking, hearing and seeing required in the normal course of performing the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform some essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.

Environmental Conditions

Work is generally performed in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls.
