Position Highlights

The School of Mind, Brain, and Behavior seeks candidates who are passionate about supporting student success for the position of Academic Advising Professional II. This on-campus, in-person position serves roughly 300-350 undergraduates in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science spanning both MAIN and ONLN campuses. The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention and persistence by building formative relationships with students to encourage engagement with opportunities to develop personally and professionally.

Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising

  • Collaborates with the NSCS team to develop, modify, and present academic and program information to new first-year and transfer students and their guests at New Student Orientation. Assists students in course planning to meet academic requirements and/or career preparation.
  • Applies transfer credits from other academic institutions for applicability to degree programs based on established articulation rules and precedent.
  • Interprets and advises students on University, College, and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Identifies or evaluates options for students who must petition for an exception to a course or program requirement. Makes approved adjustments to student's program of study.
  • Monitors academic progress of students using appropriate dashboards and reports; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring), conducts student outreach, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for further assistance as needed.
  • Assesses students' stage of development (academic, career, and personal) to promote academic growth by determining suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities. Helps students explore pertinent internships, club involvement, volunteer work, and undergraduate research opportunities.
  • Assists students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals; refers students to additional career counseling services as needed.
  • Maintains student files, records, and database; documents all pertinent student information in Trellis (Advising Notes); processes program/plan changes in UAccess.

Advising Program & Additional Student Support

  • Provides systematic input to faculty-led undergraduate committees such as Executive Committee, Curriculum, Scholarships, Assessment, and Student Awards.
  • May assist with the development and offering of seminars, workshops, and other activities/events for student onboarding, building community, academic recovery, student engagement, and/or student retention as time allows.

Administrative

  • Maintains materials for students to more easily navigate their degree paths, such as four-year plans and course checklists.
  • May assist with manual enrollment into department courses, including research, preceptorship, and internships for university credit.
  • Processes degree checks/audits for students planning to graduate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of academic policies.
  • An ability to employ effective advising techniques, such as active listening, empathy, and motivational interviewing.
  • Familiarity with college curriculum and course sequencing.
  • Basic knowledge of student development theory.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Competence and awareness/sensitivity in working with varied student populations.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Willingness to collaborate with team members with various perspectives and experiences.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Commitment to continuous learning to stay updated on academic trends, policy changes, and evolving advising practices.
  • Passion for fostering a supportive and welcoming academic environment.

  • Bachelor's degree required.
