Assistant/Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering
The School of Engineering at High Point University seeks three new full-time faculty at the Assistant/Associate ranks to begin August 2026. HPU launched new Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics majors in Fall 2024 and state of the art Makerspace and teaching labs in Fall 2025. We will make multiple hires to support these rapidly growing programs. We seek creative, dynamic individuals to play a critical role in the development of innovative, active learning classes and laboratories, and to mentor highly motivated students in undergraduate research projects and design competitions.
The successful candidates will teach a variety of courses within the Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics programs. Additional expectations include academic advising, supporting undergraduate research, assisting the department with ABET accreditation, and serving on college and university-wide committees. One new hire will be enthusiastic about leading our Senior Design Project course, including developing partnerships with local industry. Faculty appointments are for a nine-month contract period with a normal teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. or doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics, or a closely related field like Aerospace, Manufacturing, or Materials Science. All areas of research specialty are accepted, and industry experience is also desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability: The successful candidate should have demonstrated promise of excellence in teaching, a record of scholarly achievement, an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in working with highly motivated undergraduate students. While it is anticipated that these positions will be filled at the Assistant Professor level, highly qualified applicants will be considered for higher ranks. The success of our undergraduate students is our primary focus.
Responsibilities:
- Teach 24 contact hours (typically 5 – 6 classes) per year
- Advise students
- Produce scholarly research or creative activity, especially in partnership with undergraduate students
- Assist with curriculum development and ABET Accreditation
- Assist with university recruiting efforts
- Participate in department, college, and university meetings and committees
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and/or Dean
