Assistant Professor in Computational Archaeology
Job Summary
The Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden University is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor in Computational Archaeology to strengthen the Department of Archaeological Sciences. This role involves developing a research line in computational archaeology that complements existing programs.
Responsibilities
- Develop an independent research line in computational archaeology.
- Teach general and specific courses at bachelor and masters levels.
- Supervise student internships and thesis projects.
- Participate in faculty and university management and administrative tasks.
- Contribute to the department and faculty goals.
Qualifications and Requirements
- PhD in Archaeology or Computer Science/Data Science with extensive experience in the other field, or a closely related field.
- At least two years of relevant research experience beyond the PhD, ideally developing an own research line with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research.
- Demonstrated skills in at least two of the following: quantitative data analysis, GIS and spatial analysis, data science, data mining, information retrieval, machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence, as applied to archaeological research.
- Initial experience in grant acquisition, collaborative scholarly publishing, and teaching in higher education.
- Interest in developing research collaborations across departments and commitment to Open/Team Science.
- Excellent English and Dutch language skills with the capacity to teach in both.
- Good national and international network, commitment to teamwork, ethical practice, and social safety.
- Ability to supervise a wide range of student research topics.
What the Employer Offers
- An initial one-year employment contract with a view to permanent employment.
- Salary range from €4537 to €6209 gross per month based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week), depending on experience.
- Holiday allowance (8%), end-of-year bonus (8.3%), and an attractive pension scheme.
